SkepticalHumanist1980
Interesting article. It is empowering to me to see evidence that religious experiences can be produced by the brain and not some type of mystical force.
Moderator LogicalFallacy Posted March 1, 2017 Moderator Share Posted March 1, 2017 Ezekiel's visions of wheels in the middle of wheels anyone? Yep, if we could go back and test all of the prophets and sages etc, who saw visions, heard God etc, most would have some mental disorder or a physical ailment that affected mental capacity. Unless the were just making shit up?
bornagainathiest
Could it be that the religious visions of certain historical figures were due to Migraine headaches? Like Hildegard of Bingen? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scivias Some doctors have made retrospective diagnoses, suggesting so. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4103393/ What I wonder is if Hildegard's visions would have been about Allah, if she had been born in a Muslim country? Or Shiva, if she came from India? Or the Buddha, if she had been Chinese?
Moderator LogicalFallacy Posted March 7, 2017 Moderator Share Posted March 7, 2017 BAA, that is a good point. Anyone who gets auras with migraines knows of the rather impressive light display you get and it messes around with your visual systems. And if it was a silent migraine there'd be no pain with it either. Hmm I didn't think of that.. but then I don't go around thinking weird stuff I see is visions.. I tend to think something is wrong with me! (To the point that I have to admit that if God appeared to me, I'm not sure how he'd convince me I wasn't having some weird issue in my brain/visual cortex)
dertacos
I also think drugs are a part of it. I've known folks turning to Jesus because they saw Satan on acid.
