A lot of good advise here.  The best advice IMO is to just ask questions but not argue with people who are not educated in the subject field. If their answers to such questions are really BS then the person will trip themselves up by their sources, or lack thereof.  Remember also that scientists often disagree with each other in many different ways including mainstream theory.  A good example of this might be global warming. Most meteorology scientists believe that man-made global warming in general is real. Nearly all believe that global warming is real since it historically progresses in dozens of thousands of years before it turns around and reverses. Most believe that man contributes to this global warming process but even a small minority of scientists disagree with this. Some believe that man's contribution to global warming is nil or may even be a good thing, smog considerations aside. Here are a couple of links on this.

For this reason one cannot always argue on the side of what mainstream science asserts. Other scientists in that field can believe otherwise so that any true argument would concern the papers, links, their authenticity, and the details of the papers if both parties can understand them. Then argument could only be a matter of scientific interpretations, hypothesis, theory, and opinions, with no certainties involved.
