Neon Genesis
Now this is interesting and is share to spark plenty of moral debates should something more technologically advanced be made. http://www.pinktentacle.com/2008/12/scient...tly-from-brain/ Researchers from Japan’s ATR Computational Neuroscience Laboratories have developed new brain analysis technology that can reconstruct the images inside a person’s mind and display them on a computer monitor, it was announced on December 11. According to the researchers, further development of the technology may soon make it possible to view other people’s dreams while they sleep. For now, the system is only able to reproduce simple black-and-white images. But Dr. Kang Cheng, a researcher from the RIKEN Brain Science Institute, suggests that improving the measurement accuracy will make it possible to reproduce images in color. The researchers suggest a future version of this technology could be applied in the fields of art and design — particularly if it becomes possible to quickly and accurately access images existing inside an artist’s head. The technology might also lead to new treatments for conditions such as psychiatric disorders involving hallucinations, by providing doctors a direct window into the mind of the patient. ATR chief researcher Yukiyasu Kamitani says, “This technology can also be applied to senses other than vision. In the future, it may also become possible to read feelings and complicated emotional states.” The research results appear in the December 11 issue of US science journal Neuron. hereticzero
Interesting stuff. It reminds me of a carnival act where a person holds a camera to the side of a person's head and then clicks the shutter, taking a photo of what the person was thinking--it was fake. However, hopefully this new technology will go far to helping those who are paralyzed, communicate with their families.
bubbleloulicious
Neon, I was thinking about this just a few days ago wondering if something like this might be on the horizon. (I don't recall exactly what it was that made me think about it though.)
Guest Net Eng
An amazing technology but inevitable. The information stored in the brain was bound to be decoded sooner or later. Once we are able to decode information stored in the brain efficiently the legal and ethical issues will explode. Does your employer have the right to monitor your thoughts at work to ensure you're concentrating on your work ?? Can your thoughts be used against you in a court trial? Who is allowed to have this technology in the first place or will you get able to get a brain scanner at Walmart ?
chefranden
Who is allowed to have this technology in the first place or will you get able to get a brain scanner at Walmart ? Actually I'd like to have one to use on myself. Then maybe I could answer the question: "What were you thinking?!"

Dhampir
Geez...most guys' brain scans are going to look like a porn movie... Absolutely. I don't think we have to worry about such a technology being used that way. Most people can't control the content of their thoughts, so no one would want that to be freely usable on them, and therefore wouldn't try to make it usable on others. Wouldn't want any wives demanding for the sake of their marriage, to see what their man is thinking, so she knows he isn't having any thoughts she disapproves of or Job qualifications based along those lines in general. Holy crap! Throughout my entire childhood, I used to imagine that such technology existed, and I dreamed of what could be done with it. Neat. Sexton Blake
I think we can guarantee that such technology will be abused. Not just by third world dictators but by the equivalent in our own governments. Another freedom gone as there might be a time when you could be arrested for what you were thinking. With a creationist, how would you know if the machine was working or not if all you got was a blank screen?
