An Update On My Life

I don't get on here very often, in fact the last time was sometime in November. Whoops!

Anyway, since I have had some conversations with some of you, I thought I would share an update.

Still an atheist, although I call myself an apatheist - I don't really care if God exists or not.

In December, my wife left me and took my daughter with her. There are a lot of reasons why, but one of them is that the church world is all she's known since she was a pastor's wife and us losing all of our friends and connections - essentially our entire world - has taken a toll on her. We are separated but are about to start getting into talking about big issues and seeing if we can come back together.

I am a mailman during the day, and by night I was working at a grocery store, but in January I was able to quit that job and have been working part time for my friend Bart Campolo, who is the humanist chaplain at the University of Cincinnati and the son of famous preacher and author Tony Campolo. I mainly produce and edit his podcast, run his social media, and update his website. His podcast is called Humanize Me, and I'm pretty proud of the work we've done on it. He has some really good conversations with people. You can find it here: https://bartcampolo.org/humanizeme

I'm doing a lot of "soul"-searching, lots of reading (working through all of the Ehrman books again), and spending time with my two cats and a bunny. Every other Sunday I help Bart put on a humanist community dinner in Cincinnati. It's been a great way to connect with people and I'm excited about the future.

Hi there -

I admire you for the strength during this time. I too fade in and out of activity on here, but always end up coming back.

I'm sorry to hear about the toll losing religion has taken on your marriage. I am not sure if I caught your testimony on here, but please feel free to share if you have already posted it.

I'm doing some "soul" searching myself (though I don't thin souls exist). I've been started to study Philosophy, and am rereading Ehrman's The New Testament which was one of my course books back in college.

I also just started doing yoga this past Sunday with this amazing YouTube yoga instructor. She uses yoga as a way to encourage you to connect with the body fully, which is helping me find some inner peace. It sounds weird, I know. But deep down I'm craving a gentle person to guide me to learn to love myself as, before "Jesus," I  hated myself. So losing "Jesus" has reverted me to my hating-self state.

Glad to see you connecting on here. Glad you're getting an opportunity to work with the non-religious, too. I hope things work out on your side.

Sending you best thoughts.

I'm a hockey fan, so I like you already! (Go Kings Go!)  🏒

I'm so sorry to hear about your marriage -- that's got to be so hard.

I just started listening to Humanize Me and I absolutely love it. I found it by accident from another related podcast, and I was surprised to learn about Bart and his exit from Christianity. I had no idea! I have a connection to his father through a good friend of mine, who is good friends with Tony. I've met him on various occasions when he was visiting my friend. That was in the 1990s and I can remember thinking "how liberal" he was. That's hilarious now... but that was the mindset of my very evangelical mind. Listening to Bart, and hearing his story has been amazing. I want to see the documentary he and his dad did, but haven't plunked down the $14.99 that Amazon wants. But soon.

Hang in there and thanks for blogging. I so appreciate it.
