R. S. Martin
I was never punished physically, but I did get shunned in school for having a natural curiousity, and there were a few times I got in trouble with the teachers for trying to read books that were above the level that I was supposed to be at. I always read several grades above mine because I learned how to read early. And yes, RubySera, I can relate to people trying to make you think it's your fault. Although in my case, it was if I was "good enough." So I kept trying to be good enough, but of course with people like that, it was impossible. I wasn't punished physically but the mental/emotional punishment felt like being clobbered over the head. Yeah, it's the tantalizing potential of finally measuring up but never quite managing.
