Praying To Be Thin

Every hear of Weigh Down? It's one of many Christian weight loss programs, but this one seems to be twirling off into a cult. Yes, yes, I know many of us consider all of Christianity to be a cult, but this one takes the cake. Overeaters are courting eternal damnation. Obedience is measured in the amount of food left on your plate and righteousness in the number of pounds lost. Claiming that Weigh Down principles could be used to curb smoking, gossip, excessive TV watching, drug and pornography addiction and even homosexuality. Teaching that you should severely paddle your children (One couple beat their 8-year-old to death. They are pleading not guilty.) People told to quit eating because they had enough fat on their body to live off for years. Others told to stop taking antidepressants because using them was a sin. For pete's sake, they are going to kill somebody with this type of program! Can't you be sued for false medical advice? Oh yeah, they are a church, and it would be persecusion. :ugh: Here's the article. http://www.religionnewsblog.com/17184/gwen...nant-fellowship

I prayed to be thin many a time as a kid. Guess what? It didn't work. The ONLY thing that has ever worked for me was exercising. I will have to say that my fat phobic, fundy mother was one of those who believed that being even only 5 pounds overweight was a sin even though in the 80's, weight-loss cults hadn't gotten into full swing yet. Unless you consider weight watcher's one. It was all the yo-yo dieting my molther started me on that made me gain weight in the first place, too.

Gah. Stuff like that seriously pisses me off, though. There is NO reason to abuse a child ever. Certainly NOT because of what the kid looks like.

And starving yourself is not the way either. Eating sensibly and exercising is. When are people ever going to figure that out???

Or at least get more beef to eat.

I'll take either one.

Maybe I missed the verses that mentioned being fat is sinful? Slothful does not equal fat in my mind (since when is slow the same as fat?) and you can be fat without being a glutton thanks to many other issues (like, say, taking pills for migraines or some other lame reason).

I think there are other benefits to being the "right" weight, and one day I hope to find out what those are for myself, but to not sin anymore I'm pretty sure ain't one of them. Besides...once you're a hottie you have other sins to contend with. It never ends.

Ugh! That Gwen chick is the most nauseating POS I have ever listened to. Susie was into WD for a while. What a bitch.

Only if you like to listen to bitchy southern princess women who probably never really had a weight problem to begin with, talk about "feeewd" and "gluttanaay" for hours...

Praying certainly will lead to slimming if you're bloody minded enough. When you see bones in your body, be ready to praise the Lawd!

I think our obsession with weight in this country is sort of cultish already, even without Christianity getting into the mix. That article is horrifying.

I have to agree. It is very cultlike. I have to wonder if in 1,000 years, archaeologists will consider weight loss the dominant religion of our time, even more so than Christianity. Wouldn't that be ironic?

Well, fasting and praying go hand in hand, right?

How many calories does prayer burn?

On a sidenote, related to this, Christian/Bible based supplements and prayers in purpose to heal a cancer person, killed her:

This is NOT a cult, but a legitimate Christian practice - unless of course they are praying to Saint Karen Carpenter.

All religions are cults. Some are just more harmful than others.

As you might know, the Irish are a little fascinated with death, hence the type of funerals and wakes they have. Cemetaries are popular tourists attractions in Ireland. There was an old cemetary on the cliffs beside the sea. On an old gravestone where the words: "LORD SHE WAS THIN". Some of the stone had worn away taking away the letter "E".

"May your God go with you"

My friend is still into going to the weekly meetings and doing the devotional book or whatever as well she asked me if I wanted to go with her to wd meetings.. I said no, probally was not interessted in going. Like I want to be around a bunch of nerotic food obsessed xians..but I do need to eat healhier.

I wouldn't honestly be surprised. Seems like our mentality about food is tied heavily into Christian mindset....restraint is virtuous, there is a whole litany of "sins" to avoid, you must suffer to keep your weight down, you will have great reward for your dedication (thinness leads to happy love life, riches, beauty, fortune, health....) Fat is exactly the opposite...fat is Hell.

It took me a long time to deconvert from this mindset. I felt the same feelings I did deconverting from the Food Cult as I did from Christianity. The programing and feelings were almost identical. I've been fat, I've been thin, and I haven't been guaranteed anything except a number on a scale. Once I finally got it through my head that it's all a lie and that my weight had no impact whatsoever on my life...I stopped having weight problems. No guilt, no grief, no work. My cravings just dissapeared.

Go figure, hunh?
