I'd say, NBBTB, that since there's more we don't know than that which we do know about human evolution (for instance, we still don't even know when/how speech came to be, or what physiological adaptations may have accompanied it) the best thing to do is to put this "why" question in the "as-of-now unknown" file.

 

To philosophically play with it, as David Chalmers does, is stimulating and could prove beneficial in eventually nailing down the answer, but guesses should maybe remain identified as just guesses.
