Fun With Google Trends

I was exploring using Google Trends site and playing around with different ideas. Not sure that it means anything, but Dawkins now out ranks the Creationist screwballs but quite a bit in searches.

Google Trend for Dawkins, Behe, Hovind, Harris

Wow...didn't realise they had this on Google...that rocks.

And you can check out the top cities/countries that search for certain words. Unsurprisingly, every single one of the top ten cities searching for 'Christ' and 'Bible' are in the Bible Belt. And although 'humanism' remains well behind 'Christianity', 'porn' remains consistently and vastly higher than 'Jesus'. :HaHa:

Fundies do a lot of work out there. In some african countries a priest isn't a priest untill he's trained in america. Basically, it's a lot easier for them to push fire and brimstone when it's not uncommon to be set on fire.

The Christian church has had a long history with Africa in general. One book by Malidoma Patrice Somé who's name I can't recall vividly describes how he was "educated" by the Christian church in the 60's. What he described nothing short of disgusting. When I read the book my tolerance for the church turned from just annoyance to anger. It was commonplace for priests to order young boys taken from villages at night and brought into missions. There they were beaten if they mentioned their family as they were all sinners and literally CHILDREN were tortured by the church into forgetting their culture told that if they continued to cry for their parents they were going to hell. One example in his book I remember was the church forcing the children to learn french. If they spoke in mother "devil" which I believe was dagara language they were made wear a necklace with a rotting goats head. This was to be worn until the next child was caught speaking in their old language. From there they moved to another mission and were raised from age 10 until they received their college degrees in France or in africa under the guise of the church. One priest in the book even reportedly kept the heads of "sinners" outside on pikes in front of his house in the missionary village as an example. They got away with it because if they kept the whole torture part secret they could continue to show the world they were giving "savages" an education.

This was in the 60's.

People wonder why Africa is as screwed up as it is today, these people were shaped and molded by the church. Not willingly, by force. The only church to have ever even acknowledged these events was the episcopal church that offered a statement that they were sorry about the whole thing.

Those numbers don't shock me in the least bit.

Hovind dominates in South Africa. A country culture extremely different from the rest of Africa (except maybe Namibia). They (not to stereotype, but most) are incredibly intolerant of other race and religions. They are above all particularly intolerant of atheists. Having gone to school there, I'd know.

That's why Hovind dominates in South Africa. For the rest of Africa it's very different.
