GOP bigotry rears its ugly head

By: Steve Benen on Friday, August 10th, 2007 at 5:21 AM - PDT

A few weeks ago, the Senate invited a Hindu leader to deliver the daily invocation. Apparently, this has sent Idaho’s Bill Sali ® over the edge.

“We have not only a Hindu prayer being offered in the Senate, we have a Muslim member of the House of Representatives now, Keith Ellison from Minnesota. Those are changes — and they are not what was envisioned by the Founding Fathers,” asserts Sali.

Sali says America was built on Christian principles that were derived from scripture. He also says the only way the United States has been allowed to exist in a world that is so hostile to Christian principles is through “the protective hand of God.”

“You know, the Lord can cause the rain to fall on the just and the unjust alike,” says the Idaho Republican.

According to Congressman Sali, the only way the U.S. can continue to survive is under that protective hand of God. He states when a Hindu prayer is offered, “that’s a different god” and that it “creates problems for the longevity of this country.”

:twitch: Apparently Senator Sali is lacking an education about the Treaty of Tripoli ARTICLE 11, which started to be written under Washington, and Passed by the 5th congress unanimously and President Adams. Which "Church" is this country founded on? What a bunch of BS uneducated Congress-Critters we have.. :Wendywhatever:

As the government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian Religion,

Ah jeez another idiot sullying Idaho's reputation. Such a beautiful state, so many simple minds (they did elect Chenowith more than once afterall).

There really are good, clear minded free thinkers and just genuine nice people that live there to. Really there are

The truth comes out! Generally when xians make arguments to unify church and state through forced prayer, that pesky little issue of OTHER religious is carefully ignored. See the issue flushed out when something like this happens!

Sali got one thing right: it's not appropriate to have a Hindu leader lead an invocation in the Senate. And he doesn't see that it's not a whit more appropriate for a xian to lead an invocation. But wait, there's more--the irony that just bowls you over: based on the little googling I've just done, this bozo seems to want to instill a xian theocracy. It makes me want to puke. And it's no less nauseating when Sali's apologists are quoted defending his statements in the other news articles I googled.

The original link mentions three protesters, but doesn't seem to cover the Sali angle. Here are a couple more links that I just found:

From the Boise Weekly link:

He's got Bryan Fischer at his side, who agrees that anyone who worships "cows, monkeys and snakes" is at odds with the whole "One Nation Under God" notion.

Ha! that's my old pastor. Fucking dumbshit. And I say that without a degree of irony. He used to write weekly articles in the local paper about how the founding fathers were all fundies.

I should actually thank this fuck for my deconversion. His views on the founding fathers and his passionate support for gay discrimination laws were what ultimately caused me to drop out of church altogether.

ps., the Boise Weekly is a good example of the clear minded people that live in Idaho I mentioned in the post above. It's a great paper and an excellent alternative to the tripe pushed on people by their mainstream press.

in the 6th Century BCE, the Athenians created the first democracy. It wasn't anything like the style of democracy that we practice in our Republic, only free males of military age or with military training were allowed to vote and representatives of a governing council were not elected, each authorized voter instead voted on every statue, every law and every treaty. This the first democracy of the western world was the template of the democratic practices of the later Roman Republic and the even later Republic of the United States of America. This is a round about way of saying, "Yes Virginia, America was founded on Pagan principles!" - Heimdall :yellow:

I've said it before... and I like to quote myself... it adds spice to my conversation (Thank you Oscar, you magnificent bugger). Democracy is a wonderful idea, in both its Socialist and Capitalist forms. It's such a shame we've never tried it.

If I were a school teacher, and wanted to point to a real-life illustration of the definition of "pandering", I would point to Mr. Sali.

You know, something that always strikes me is how folks who claim that American was founded on "Christian principles" seem utterly unable or unwilling to explain in any detail exactly what those principles supposedly are. Much less provide actual Biblical citations to demonstrate their assertion.

It couldn't be that they're just asshats, now, could it. :Wendywhatever:

It wouldn't surprise me. The man leaks disingenuity.

I see your Sali and Chenowith, and I raise you Orrin Hatch and Chris Butters.

Which is to say, I feel your pain. Utah is in the exact same position. I love the geographical state, I just hate all the people.
