..of the above..

Mazda car, 1990 era, good little beater mobile to go for groceries, check mail, do the family goofing around with, dies on me.

Have the big book from Chiltons. Follow instructions, test what I can, can't figure the forkin' problems out.

Get "close", as in "Now big dummy, thou shalt start buying expensive parts to make good guesses and tryeth to figure thine problem-eths out.."

Well, fuck that crap, call tow truck, get car to the shop I use for impossible for daFatman to repair fixes.

Two days later and almost 300usd later, fixed, works well, goes faster and better.

Problem? Exactly what I troubleshot, but wasn't confident enough to go buy the 300 usd part new to fix it.

Shop got a used part, placed it in, works great..

Got scanners, testing tools, and all the shitte to fix newer than '92 cars, but in that space between '89-'91, there is a vacancy for testing standards. I don't have the use for the plethora of tools it takes to make all these diagnosii...

Oh well, car runs, and she's happy not to have to drive the big ute..

ArrGGGhhhh!!@$#%0**66^6 HR :HOEYOQW$E !!!!!!

Oldjew..

Was my craft and livelihood for years, tools and space seem to grow tighter as I collect more of them.

Been shedding tools and boxes off to my Kid, letting his take collections and selections so he can have his when it is his time to work in whatever he chooses.

Wouldn't try to upmanship anything, I have what I've got, and it works for me.. Well, save the car!

********

Clearie,

Horses, truck at cats, what more can a girl ask for? :)

Old computers come to my place to die, then somehow morph into zombies. There's an original IBM PC upstairs, and an Adam that's waiting for a keyboard to be shipped here from the West Coast.

And then there's all the old stereo equipment we found in the back lane, including a receiver that needs a new power switch. We also have an ancient tube radio, circa 1940's, that looks gorgeous but has never been plugged in at this location. (Someday it's going to an old-radio specialist for a checkup.)

And that Makita miter saw that someone just tossed out. A trip to the local repair depot, and 65 bucks, and I got myself one sweet portable saw.

But mainly I have musical instruments... Four guitars, four keyboards, a clarinet, a violin, and probably half a mile of cabling.

But cats are free, so hey...

*weep* I bought over $40 worth of litter, tinned food and dry food today. They may be free, but they ain't cheap.

I've had three cars.

A 1984 Datsun Nissan Pulsar NX. This car was small, ran like shit, wouldn't do anything over 75, had an old radio that lacked even a cassette deck. It didn't even have an 8-track deck. It had a volume knob, a frequency adjusting knob, and that was it. And the glove box wouldn't close.

A 1989 Grand Prix. I loved this car. Except it left me stranded a few miles from home during a cold December day, 40 some miles from home at Ball State, and a few miles from home on a rainy day. The radio didn't work, the air conditioner didn't work at all, and it liked to break down. It did handle nice though, would haul ass, and had chairs that adjusted damn near everything on them. I also blew the transmission on it.

A 2002 Mercury Cougar. I've had it for a few months short of three years, and already I've had to replace two break rotors, two windshield wiper motors, passenger side head light and tail light, the windshield needs replaced, the driver's side speakers go out when the temperature falls below 50, and the meter that tell you how many miles you have left is so far off you can't even use it as an estimation. According to it, I should be able to drive over 330 miles on a full tank, which I think is about 15 gallons. That gives me a rate of 22 MPG, which is not accurate either, as my car gets 26 MPG.

As for tools, I have the basic stuff to work on a car, such as a bit to get my oil filter off, change spark plugs, and that is it. Actually, I hate working on cars. I do have every tool you need for scrapping though.

I meant it as a compliment and not to be smart as I envy you that you got what you have and it pays to hold on to things like that because years ago I held on to old trucks that never run for parts or to fix up in the future for a back up.
