A new free e-book by Amy Black entitled "Breaking Up With Jesus" chronicles her thoughts and experiences in de-conversion from Christianity. I have found that grieving the loss of my faith feels the same as when I grieve the loss of a friend. If you have found this to be true for yourself, don’t be embarrassed about it. Of course you are going to grieve when you lose something very important to you whether it is a person, a pet, a job, a home or a belief system. After any loss, there’s a hole in your life where something you loved used to be and it hurts knowing it’s not there. -- Amy Black, in "Breaking Up With Jesus"

Grieving a belief system may be even a harder loss than even a loved one, because the beliefs were completely internal and of your own choice.

That pain would be the hardest of all, and possibly the hardest to break, because when someone dies, you know they are not coming back, but with a belief system, there is always that possibility, like a romantic breakup of a reunion.

I agree. As a child, when afraid of the dark, prayers comfort you, later in life when things are going wrong, a good prayer seems therapeutic. In times of peril, life threatening or otherwise, it is comforting to call on a creator.

When you loose this you loose a safety net, one you used to help keep you sane. You also loose your invisible friend, the one that listens oh so well, never interrupts you when you speak, nor does it ever disagree with you. Once you realize the reason for the silence and the patience, it becomes most sad. Some people turn back to religion after leaving it because they cannot bear the void. It is better, some reason, to live a lie in comfort, then suffer with reality. "ignorance is bliss" is another that comes to mind.

Yes you will grieve over your lost religion. But grieving gets easier in time. I have buried many people and a few pets that were close to me. The pain will subside, it always does.

:brutal_01: Ah shucks, I'd rather pray to Dog as I know I will at least get an answer if only it is a bark or a wag of her tail.
