Halloween

It's Halloween, so where are all the news stories about how horibbly evil and sinful fundies think it is to actually have fun on this particular holiday? They seem to be oddly silent for once.

Dawkins, Harris, Hitchens and company have kept them so busy that they're tired.

Besides, they skipped Halloween to go straight to Christmas:

Although, there ARE still the stories like this:

Happy Halloween! (Best holiday of the year).

I'm so glad I was allowed to celebrate Halloween as a child. It rocks my box. Don't get to do anything this year though. Too much physics homework. :(

I've always been into Halloween. Even my parents who are Christians don't think of it as 'evil'...but rather fun for kids. I don't do much on Halloween, but I still love it, because it reminds me of good times when I used to trick or treat and listen to ghost stories. I'll continue celebrating Halloween in my own way and that's by viewing consecutive horror films in the darkness of my room =)

In Australia each year, starting about 6 or 7 seven years ago, Toys 'R' Us (being and American chain) has been selling "trick or treat" Halloween stuff. And after each Halloween period, the stuff is put back into storage for next year - with barely an item sold. (My cousin is a manager at a Toys 'R' Us store).

Australians just aren't interested in American celebrations. They (Toys 'R' Us) do keep trying though.

Meh, I don't really give a crap about the modern/commercial elements of the holiday. It's in the history I find something to get excited about. I may not believe 'em, but I lurves me some hackle-raisin' ghost stories.

My xtian supervisor says Halloween is "evil and weird" to her though her ex takes the kids out to church festivals. Still I and another co-worker dressed up though my costume just consisted of pink hair dye and orange, black, and blue clothes (tie-dye with a Morrissey t-shirt). My co-worker dressed as a ninja with a big button which said "RELAX!" buttoned on his chest. :HaHa: Everyone got a real laugh out of our costumes though our boss ignored them. I guess she felt uncomfortable over our having a bit of fun.

I'm just staying home this year and watching some scary ( and not so scary) movies. I've got work and school tomorrow so I don't want to wear myself out too much as I've been battling a kidney infection for two weeks now. :(

I just don't get my boss's problem with Halloween as she loves Christmas and Easter-which also have pagan elements. She thought I was crazy when I tried to explain that Christmas trees and yule logs are from pagan times and not an xtian idea. I found it rather ironic that she left a Toy's-R-Us Christmas catalog out on a table for the other tutors and students to look at. All I saw in that catalog was mostly shitty toys ( except for the classic stuff from the 80's and other decades). I was thinking to myself "Sheesh! Xtians have a problem with Halloween, but when it comes to Christmas it's o.k. as it's all about Jesus and spending loads of money on junk your family doesn't want."

Cultural/social expectations of the holidays really freak me out. Christmas is really being pushed hard in China, which really sucks. I see it as the foot in the door for either the christianization or the commercialization of China, just pleazzzze don't let it be the christianization.

Anyway, as a child getting dressed up and trick or treating was rockin', halloween was one of my favorite times of the year: apple cider, crisp cool air, autumn leaves, woodmoke, ghost stories, the harvest season. It was always an exciting time. But now the mass cultural practice kinda freaks me out, the image of millions of children wrapping themselves up in plastic and going door to door begging for candy, to the extent we have to have warnings and regulations and local government involvement to keep it all safe.

I'm all for people who can think of new and original ways to celebrate holidays. Civilization is just too damn big for everyone to do it the same way. If we keep that up, we'll all soon be living in the World United Empire of McDonaldDisneyland, a subsidiary of Coca Cola Inc.

From what we are led to believe by the Chinese in Australia - China is practically a Christian society now. Many of the old churches in Sydney are now owned by Chinese and attended by predominantly Chinese congregations.

Fuck the fundies! Halloween is fun and there is nothing nicer than seeing beautifully built women in provocative Halloween garb! Nothing says it better by implying, "fuck religion!"

I read that in the US Halloween is the 2nd biggest holiday behind xmas. Obviously this is mainly tied to sales but that's fine with me since it's actually a fun holiday open to everyone. As far as I'm concerned you can take xmas and easter and stuff'em hard and deep. Good riddance. If we need a "big" commercial holiday I'm all for Halloween. Better my money goes there than the others.

My son went out this halloween for only the 2nd time in his 17yrs! He's making up for all the childhood fun that he missed from having to always stay home from class on halloween or be excused from any teaching or activity in school that was related to halloween. I'm sure his teachers must have thought that I was nuts, as I would not even allow him to do homework that contained halloween references! How mental was I??? No wonder he hates xianity and wants nothing to do with religion.

Last night after my psychology class I headed for the Day of the Dead festival that was going on in my college's quad. If you can find a Day of the Dead (a Hispanic holiday) festival where you live I recommend you take your family and join in the fun. There's some Catholic stuff ingrained into Day of the Dead, but there's still a lot of stuff such as skulls, skeletons, and other so called "pagan" things which you see during this holiday. I watched some extraordinary Aztec dancing and chatted with friends who were putting up altars for their dead family members and famous people.

:HaHa: I can't wait until Monday as I'm planning to freak out my xtian boss by wearing my Day of the Dead bracelet which has little skulls painted on it. She thinks my "evil eye" bracelet (from a Greek festival I attended this summer) is cute, but I'll bet I'll get some talk about "Satanism" if I come in wearing something with skulls on it.

That would be an excuse in Australia to take them before the Anti-discrimination board or sue them for all they are worth.

:HaHa: Or probably in her nieve mind she might think it's a Pirates of the Caribbean themed product as she loves those movies. I have pirate themed bracelets which she doesn't have a problem with though they have skulls and crossbones on them. It seems like some of my supervisors and students think pirates are cool so I think probably my new piece of jewelery might go undetected by any xtian "satanic radar".

Strange how people don't have a problem with liking pirates though true pirates were as vicious as any modern criminal, but things like anime ( or other aspects of Asian culture) are seen as "evil and pornographic".

You must mean Hentai (pornographic Anime). I don't see anything else other than that that would be considered evil by Christians. Unless they think temples and shrine maidens are also evil. That's just stupid then.

This is an incorrect use of a word. The word "hentai" simply means "perverted." Something can be pornographic but not hentai.

Also, anime or manga can have a "hentai" theme, but it is not referred to as "hentai." Hentai is not a classification or genre of film and comics.

The term hentai is used frequently to refer to people of a sexually perveted bent. But it is never used as a genre of film or comics.

Temples and shrine maidens are evil because they show reverence toward to a non-christian entity. Those heathens should know their commandments, dammit!

Unfortunately xtians see any nudity in television shows as pornography. Once someone at work went on a rant over the anime character Crayon Shin Chan as in the anime he was showing off his "elephant" to his classmates. This xtian said "Why is anime full of people getting naked and witchcraft?". Crayon Shin Chan is not even an adult anime title, but in his xtian mind he thought all anime was "Naughty" because even non-pornographic anime has some nudity.

:HaHa: Once on my way to the bus stop with a co-worker he announced that he likes He-Man, Superman, and several other American superheros and that anime is "full of pornographic and occult images". As I had been watching a video at YT about He-Man and the occult I said to him "Isn't Masters of the Universe full of occult images? Also don't you ever think that He-Man could be a homosexual as when he's Prince Adam he wears pink and lavender?" That guy blushed so bright red that another co-worker with us was laughing her ass off. After that he never teased me or made any comments about anime again.

I'm aware that Hentai means 'Perverted.' I meant it in the Western knowledge of the term, because pornographic Anime is widely known as Hentai Anime (or just H-Anime) outside of Japan, despite it being incorrect. Thanks for the true insight though.
