SilentLoner
U. Senate votes to end graduation prayer http://media.www.diamondbackonline.com/med...r-3699954.shtml I was thrilled to see the news on todays daily university newspaper (The Diamondback). But alas the joy was short lived. If you guys look at the comments section you'll se the usual nutcases are raving. I frequent the comment section quite a bit so it tends to get under my skin. Coincidentally this happened alongside the showing of a porn movie that the state senate actually threatened to cut university funding over. About 200 students showed a part of the film downloaded from their laptops last night in free speech protest. So the leading whine is along the lines of "Prayer is bad but porn advocated." Um, yeah we're not forcing people to sit through a porno film at graduation. THAT would be inappropriate, but its not the case." Well, another reason for me to look foward to graduation. Neon Genesis
It never ceases to amaze me how many xtians blatantly ignore what Jesus said about how we shouldn't pray in public to be see by others like the hypocritical Pharisees.
Andy
Your university sounds awesome. Mine just recently decided to build a chapel on campus. This is in a time when they're making budget cuts in other areas, including financial aid to students. It pisses me off.
SilentLoner
Like I called it, today there was a long protest letter in the newspaper using the "free speech" argument for the graduation prayer, "porn allowed abut prayer bashed" and some thinly veiled non-believer bashing." I've been very comfortable as an atheist on this campus, and there a quite a lot of us here. Unfortunately a good portions of the xtians are more along the crazy line. And whats wierd is a lot of them I know are majoring in biological sciences. :um: BTW, I was wondering if anyone could get me the verse where xtians are told not to pray in public? I thought I had it on my computer somewhere but I don't. I'd really appreciate it (as I'm off to the never ending comment battle).

Link Matthew 6:5 (New International Version) Prayer 5"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.
Guest Marty
Finish it up by going a bit further. Dont have my bible here, but the next verse says something like...so instead pray in private, so only god sees, and you will receive your reward from god. Neon Genesis
The next verse is "But you, when you pray, (D)go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and (E)your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you. Seeker630
One of my daughters graduated from Michigan State University. At the ceremony the did a "moment of silence" thing. Which is pc I suppose, but entirely unnecessary. I often wonder what the point of a prayer is at such events other than flaunting someone's religiosity in the faces of others who want nothing to do with it. It really is insulting to people who are not religious nutters. It's just Christian grandstanding.
SilentLoner
And I check the news today to find that the university president, Dan Mote has just bent over for the Jesus freaks. Unreal. http://www.diamondbackonline.com/home/inde...89-b53cec76905a Univesity senate overruled and prayer reinstated. I think its safe to say if the porn film incident hadn't coincided with this it wouldn't have been half the firestorm. Seriously, this guy has to be the worst university president ever. Security lapses, explosion of on-campus crime, deteriorating facilities, students forced to sleep in tents in front of the library over the housing crisis. Just some of the crap thats happened on campus since he took office. Next week forecast: smug xtians and editorial war in newspaper. I need to graduate out of here... I should think that the student senate would come out with a public statement to the effect that all of those opposing Mote's decision should boycott the ceremony, and make a major stink of it in the process. After all, they can't deny anyone their degree for not attending can they?
