Just before the three minute mark he suggests everyone aged 18-24 should have to serve two years of mandatory military or alternative service!

And in the same speech he has the gall to praise those who died so we can enjoy freedom. Freedom from what exactly? He also makes a comparison to Jesus dying so we can enjoy freedom. Blech.

I was going to write a rant about this on memorial day, but the mood passed. My good friend John commands the local Honor Guard and buries 10 or a dozen vets a week with all the military glory shit. He does speeches about dying for freedom and all that nonsense, even though I've convinced him that few if any of our wars were or are about freedom. The Revolution, and maybe the Civil War, and WWII you could count in that column.

But I agree with the Mandatory service thing. It is good to get the young pissed off just as they start life for themselves. Maybe they'd pay better attention to what is going on.

I could be wrong (I haven't looked) but wouldn't they have to change the Constitution to do mandatory conscripted service of any sort (a short-term draft is borderline as it is)?

the United States had a draft all the way up to the 1970's, when changes made it harder for rich kids to defer or get out of having to serve, so they scrapped the system. But every male (18 to 30 something) in the country is registered for selective service, just in case we need a draft.....but we have never had a mandatory EVERYONE GOES conscription.

I did my time before I was confirmed. If I have to go again then I'm going to Canada.

I just wanted to share one of my favourite moments from Generation Kill: the encounter with the chaplain.

"Don't worry – we won't rest until the Iraqi threat to your way of worship has been completely neutralized!" lol...

You know, when I turned 18, I refused to sign up for selective service. I remember my dad telling me I "have to" when the form came in the mail, but I ripped it in half and threw it in the trash. I never had a single repercussion from that, except for the odd fact that I have never been called for jury duty, while my sister, 6 years younger than me, has been called for JD about 4 times since she turned 18. I don't know if selective service has anything to do with that, as of course my sis never had to sign up for that...

I don't know, mandatory service might be a good idea.

Right now, pretty much the only people who go into the military are those who believe all the stuff about patriotism etc. and those who have otherwise limited finacial & career opportunities. I think civilian society would benefit from having a wider range of people get the inside experience of the military - broaden their perspectives & so on. I think it would also benefit the military. It would bring a few more Hawkeye Pierces in among all the Frank Burnses (for those of you who watch MASH), & perhaps broaden the military's perspective. I know Switzerland and Israel both have mandatory service & I get the impression it's benefitted their societies.

The difference being, of course, the Swiss military isn't terribly likely to be called into action in some god-forsaken patch of sand on the other side of the world so they can fight and die for Swiss political and oil interests.

I agree with the idea of a short period of universal military/civil service in theory, but the culture of the U.S. and the mentality of our government are such there's absolutely no way I would want to be obligated to follow orders from "our guys" for a single month, let alone two years.

How about a compromise? Mandatory service for the children of all elected officials in the US. And no opting out for the Texas National Guard or college deferrments. You hold office, your kid goes in the line of fire.

He appears to be supporting Obama's policy goal. Obama wants mandatory national service.

Obama wants a return to slavery, and he doesn't care about the Constitution. Liberals think slavery is good, as long as its done under Socialism. (Sorry, no offense to Slavs intended.)

"Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction."

I really love the hypocrisy that this represents.

Right wing talk radio goon squads demonize anything government related that intrudes on the lives of people, saying that it takes away our "freedom".

If they don't like something, they'll say it's a commie, socialist, Marxist, and statist plan to serve Satan.

Yet, when it comes to mandatory service, where people would be required to serve the state, it's just fine.

Take away the ability to fund wars by issuing debt and creating money out of thin air, and watch how fast wars and military adventures would be curtailed.

This chaplain needs to justify his salary to every taxpayer.

What exactly does he contribute to GDP, national welfare, or to humanity?

Don't start asking for people to serve some monolith when you're part of the system taking their money.

Bullshit, you are just pulling lies out of your ass. I just have to say it so that it doesn't look like people are agreeing with him/her.

In some states, including Florida, jury members are selected for prospective service based on the driver's license records. I'm from Michigan, and at one time they used registered voter rolls.

I've always thought it would be a good idea to institute some kind service plan for kids out of high-school (not mandatory though, that is a bit much). I've always felt it should be 2 years military or civil services (for those who don't want or agree with military). Once you've served your 2 years, college is free. Period.

Best of both worlds, you get a large (volunatry) work force to get civil projects done and would also allow many people who could never afford college a viable option.

If I'd had the choice of a couple years of digging ditches or whatever rather than having to pay what I am now for loans, I'd have done it in a heart beat.

Michigan uses drivers licenses or state ID cards now.

Yeah I have since leaned this. I think more and more states have gone this route. One reason being people like my sister, who for years has avoided registering to vote so she wouldn't be called up for jury duty. And for that reason it opens up a much larger potential pool of jurors. A large percentage of people in any state are not registered to vote.
