♦ nivek ♦
NASA images show Jupiter hit by object Fox News "Astronomers say Jupiter has apparently been struck by an object, possibly a comet. Images taken by NASA early Monday show a scar in the atmosphere near the south pole of the gas giant. The images, taken by the space agency's infrared telescope in Hawaii, come on the 15th anniversary of another comet strike. In 1994, Jupiter was bombarded by pieces of the comet Shoemaker-Levy 9. Scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena captured the new images after receiving a tip from an amateur astronomer the night before." Super Moderator florduh Posted July 22, 2009 Super Moderator Share Posted July 22, 2009 Still, I think they might trace the point of origin back to OrYgunn. But Kev was down here visiting me at the time. I swear on a stack of Bibles.
OpheliaGinger
I remember reading a couple years ago about how astronomers were watching as a comet hit Jupiter. They expected to see the comet to go straight through the gas planet but there were no signs of it, so they speculated that the massive pressure on the gas planet pulverized the comet. Guest Davka
How cool would it feel to be an amateur astronomer and catch something like this on your backyard telescope that the boys on Mauna Kea had missed?

I've seen the pictures of it. It looks like the comet (Shoemaker-Levy 9) skipped across the planet but it was different chucnks of it hitting in a line. hereticzero
It would be amazing to know how much stuff the outer planets caught before it reached earth.
