Night Owls?

Ok, I'm a night owl, I work at night, and I'm looking at going to evening classes at my local college since my important ones are over now. I was just wondering is there or are there any night people that roams the board. it's been something i've been wondering about.

I'm on most nights until 0230-0400 Pacific time.

 

Meds make things dicey sleep-wise. Even If I'm not chatting or posting usually taking time to catch up on ExC and the other spots I enjoy hanging at.

 

Use time at my night to sweep floors and mop beer spills off of WMDave's floors..

I've always been a night owl. I have a job where I work nights, so I'm up all night now.

Heh, I chose my screen name because I knew I would be on this site most late at night. I just do my best thinking at this time for some reason. Or maybe I only think I do. Plus I have no friends where I live and I get lonely so I 'socialize' via the internet for company. And usually when I can't sleep its because philosophical/ existential thoughts are keeping me up. I also lurk a blogging site though that has been a bit dull lately.

I'm a night owl too. I don't really mentally wake up until around 8 at night.

I'm also one of the Nocturnal People.

 

Always have been, as far back as I remember; even as a child I tended not to sleep until later at night. I function best when I head to sleep at about 2:00 or 3:00 AM, and get up around noon. I get into full swing by around 5 PM. My most productive, creative hours are between 5:00 PM and 11:00 PM; I always get a second wind somewhere around 9:30, no matter what. I LOATHE mornings - cold, clammy things - and adore nights, dark and quiet and beautiful.

 

I can shift this schedule forcibly if I need to, for an appointment or travel or what have you, but invariably crash after 2 or 3 days trying to get up when "normal" people do. 7 AM is the middle of the night for me, and that's that. Hence I've always tended to take afternoon and evening shifts when I work, or some shift that starts later in the morning, or have done work from home.

 

I can't tell you how much shit I've gotten over my lifetime for being this way. Called names like "lazy", "layabout", "irresponsible" and the like, simply because I never fit the culturally-sanctioned up-at-dawn, 9-to-5 schedule that "normal", "responsible" people do (and which employers have tended to demand). I can't tell you how many times I've tried to change my circadian rhythm to suit others, and all the tricks I've tried to do so: drugs, relaxation techniques, forced bedtimes, forced rising times, multiple alarms... you name it, I've tried it, and every method has failed spectacularly.

 

It's only been in the past few years that I've figured out that there isn't actually anything wrong with me, I just have my clock set differently from others. I still work just as hard, I still sleep just fine (though I've called myself an insomniac because anxiety does sometimes keep me awake), I still hold a mostly regular schedule, I just do it at different hours than my society tells me are acceptable. It's night people like us that make a 24-hour business world possible. It's night people like us that watch over the rest of the world while they're sleeping, who watch the skies at night and see amazing things, who keep emergency services going 24/7, who keep freight running, and so on.

 

I've seen things at night that day people wouldn't believe: comets, auroras, shooting stars, nebulae... attack ships on fire off the shoals of Orion...

I'm working a day job right now, but My natural environment is 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. It's all I can do to get off the computer by midnight, even if I have to be up by seven.

 

I did work night shift at a restaurant, many years ago. As much as I enjoyed the hours, I found it difficult to organize the rest of the day in a sane manner.

I prefer being up at night, but since I have to be up for work at 6:30 three days a week (or earlier on days I have a morning class if I have one), I'm not up too late on work days - if I don't get my beauty rest, I become the bitch from hell. Get my zzz's and I'm sweet as sugar :)

 

But my natural body rythmn is getting up around 10am, go to sleep around 1 am - too bad not too many things work with that :(

I'm a night-owl...sometimes.

 

I was originally diagnosed with Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome (DSPS) many years ago. During the course of trying to "treat" it with chronotherapy things went totally wrong and I wound up much, much worse. Gwenmead sure sounds like she may be someone who should take a look at DSPS (not just at Wikipedia...it's a bit dry...I think www.talkaboutsleep.com or the Nite-Owl Yahoo forum might be better).

 

I've since been diagnosed with Non-24-hour sleep-wake syndrome (n-24) which is a horrific way to exist. I just "drift" around the clock. So for a time I'll be "normal" and then it will move until I'm the inverse of that and then back again over the course of a number of weeks. Around and around. Nothing, so far, can stop it and I take some very strong meds just to try to slow how fast I "move" (not Michael Jackson strong ;) ).

 

I used to be able to use some "tricks" like staying up for a day or so to "reset" but as I age that is becoming less and less effective (it used to work about every time but now it's really hit and miss).

Yeah, I'm familiar with DSPS, enough to hazard a guess that if I ever found a sleep specialist who knew what they were doing I'd probably be diagnosed with it. There was a time in life when I would have been interested in that, if only so I could at least say to people who assumed I was just lazy and irresponsible that no, I actually have a medical disorder. Nowadays I no longer look at it as if there's something wrong with me, whether it's a moral failing, a bad habit, or a disorder; I prefer not to pathologize what I believe is simply different rather than abnormal.

 

Sleeping this way doesn't fit what my society demands or wants, but fuck them. At least I sleep regularly though, for which I'm grateful - that ever-rotating 24-hour drift just sounds like hell. If I knew what kept my clock ticking regularly, I'd give you some, mwc. :(

Me too! For me I was happily living those hours until recently, where certain things are getting me up at crazy hours like 4 and 6 am. :(

i completely agree, 9 am is bedtime and my day starts at 5 pm looking at the awesome sun setting (yay fall) and all the best shows start 8pm anyway.
