♦ nivek ♦
"Corruptissima re publica plurimae leges.""(The more corrupt the state, the more numerous the laws.)" -- Cornelius Tacitus (55-117 A.D.) The overall importance of protecting innocent children from incompetent parenting justifies the inconvenience to a few parents and the inevitable imperfections of a licensing system." -- Jack C. (New York and London: Plenum Press, 1994), p. 243. http://quotes.liberty-tree.ca/quote_blog/Jack.Westman.Quote.663C "It would not be unreasonable, by analogy with a motor vehicle licence, that a permit to reproduce should also be needed with a minimum age of, for example, twenty-five, and a proof required that the parents are of sufficient maturity and financial resource to take proper care of the child. Young, sexually active, but emotionally immature teenagers would need help." -- Sir Roy Calne Source: Too Many People (London and New York: Calder Publications and Riverrun Press, 1994), p.113. http://quotes.liberty-tree.ca/quote_blog/Roy.Calne.Quote.6572
NonXNonExX
While i agree a parenting license might not be a bad idea, i think 21 might be a more reasonable limit. That's how old my parents were when they started their family of 7 kids. We were a typical dysfunctional family, but we always had adequate food, clothing and shelter and we all managed to leave home and live on our own without getting into any major legal problems. Just meeting that objective seems to be beyond the reach of many parents, but there are already government agencies responsible for taking care of unwanted children and abused children. Perhaps a better idea might be reform of those agencies. I'm afraid that issuing licenses might just add to the government bureaucracy and contradict the sentiments of your first quote.
