wannabewise
In a nutshell, this situation involves the actions of an extremist Christian group at the funeral of a Marine who died in Iraq. Members of the notorious church, Westboro Baptist Church (who are pharisees gone beserk), demonstrated at the funeral. They thanked god for the death of American soldiers, as they believe this is god's judgement on the US for its misdeeds. Sick bastards! The father of the Marine sued them, lost the case and now has to pay the fuckers' legal fees! Below are links to the stories. If anyone feels they'd like to support the Marine's father, I've also posted the link for his website where you can find info on how to do that. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/03/29/father-of-dead-marine-ord_n_517614.html http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/03/08/westboro-church-protests-_n_489923.html http://www.matthewsnyder.org/help.html
Snowflake
There aren't words to describe the hatred that I have for Phelps and Westboro Baptist Church. Thanks for the links, I'd like to support the family any way I can.
Abmin9
Those Fuckers showed up at the church I still work at (VERY Liberal Episcopal so it's tolerable, at least for the money). The worst part was that out of a dozen of them, 8 were children. They were holding signs and all. Rather than challenge them, we decided to ignore them as we learned that they make a KILLING with lawsuits. The tough part is, they're no more likely to convert anyone they visit to their thinking than anyone else is to get them OUT of their twisted ways. Ugh!!! Objet_trouve24
There are two very, very well made, informative documentaries made about them. The one I like best is by Louis Theroux. He actually goes and spends time with the family. The whole thing is absolutely heart wrenching. The entire movie is available on youtube, here's part 1: The other is called Fall From Grace. In that one, they even try to track down some of Phelps' children who disowned the church, and get a couple really good interviews. At the end, it shows the Phelps family watching the finished documentary. Their reaction was shocking, not something you'd ever expect. Here's a trailer: Also, for a quick laugh, I'm not really Moore's biggest fan or anything, but this is awesome:
ebonileigh
When I learned about this today I just couldn't believe it, I've known about the WBC for a while now and their picketing, I feel so terribly sorry for the family after having to say goodbye to their son and having to put up with that mob at the funeral, I have an adult son and I can only imagine how terribly hurt and pained and angry they must have been on a day that was unbearable enough, and now this. Oh, how religion poisons everything. Surely surely there must be a time and a place where people's right to free speech steps over the line into other people's right to privacy in a public place like a cemetary, perhaps they should be classified as private places. Fucking hell, what a mess.
Objet_trouve24
...perhaps they should be classified as private places. They're required by law to stay a certain distance away from the cemetery. Doesn't seem to phase them, they try and get as close as they can, usually standing by the road between the funeral and the cemetery, so the family and guests would have to go past them. There've been some great counter protests to try to assist the funeral goers. When they protested Matthew Shepherds funeral, a bunch of the locals made angel costumes with tall wings, and stood in front of WBC. Some block with large sheets of paper, cardboard, etc (The pride parade here in Albuquerque does too, since we have a particular church that can't seem to leave us alone), and then there's the Patriot Guard Riders, who show up with motorcycles, and rev them louder and louder to drown out WBC chanting, singing and shouting obscene things. So, there is something that can be done.
ebonileigh
Thanks for letting me know that they are being countered by very inventive means by the very thoughtful and caring in society, I really feel for you guys in the US, having to put up with all that shit....god how I hate religion. What madness.

wannabewise
On a positive note, I was very impressed with remarks made by Health Secretary Sebelius about this church: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/04/07/kathleen-sebelius-condemn_n_529035.html
