Goodbye Jesus

Letters To God And Chemotherapy

LivingLife

Recommended Posts

I step watched the movie letters to god yesterday. I thought it was in the same meme as Bruce Almighty but it turned out to be a fucking woo woo episode.

Basically kid has brain tumour, has op, undergoes chemo, is brave and all, writes letters to god and gives to mailman, mother is a nurse, film goes on, kid dies, at the credits there are "testimonies" of similar where prayer helped and the patient is still cancer free but the catch is all of them included medical science in one form or another.

Do the woo woos not even realize that IF medical science has any part of the healing, god had fuckall to do with it in the first place? Why does their omnifuckingeverything god need to rely on science for performing healing, secondly, why could this omnifuckingeverything god not prevent the disease in the first place?

With all the stuff I read concerning the USA, it really sounds like you are entering dark ages 2.0.

Even when I was a woo woo, I would give credit to the doctor's and medical staff and medical technology and realise that the reaction to gawd was merely emotional.

In the movie, the kid inspires other kids to write to god and the write a huge fucking mailbag full of letters to god which the starring mailman empties the contents on stage at a school event, the irony is that ALL these letters are indicative of

1. god does not have a postal address

2. only a human pretending to be god could answer the letters

3. in spite of a all the letters, the kid still dies.

Boo fucking hoo

Then they erect a mega postbox in memory of the kid where folk can write to gawd, talk about fucking idiocy?

Please tell me the average American is not this gullible?

I'm afraid so. Last year, when those 33 miners were taken out of the mine in Chile- that was all God's doing. God got every bit of the credit and the rescuers got none, that I could tell. Our assistant pastor said that the miners were talking about how there was 34 people down there, Jesus was there and never left them, and the church broke out in applause. I'm thinking - what are these people smoking? If the law of gravity can be attributed to God, then it was His own darn fault the thing caved in. As usual, man does something good, and God gets the credit for it.

Jesus was there with them, eh? Interestingly enough, we're now finding out they were smoking pot, watching porn, and asking for blow up dolls and not having continuous prayer meetings.

I wish I could. Hell, there are still areas of the country that have Sunday Blue Laws - can't sell alcoholic beverages on the Lord's day. Millions here firmly believe we are a Christian nation by original design. As soon as our disgraced televangelists are released from prison they repent and we give them a new television show. After every major sporting event the victor gives thanks to God for the win.

It's depressing if you let yourself think about it too long.

So I just finished my first 2 clients this morning. one tells me that God gave a miracle to his son because they raised a 'mark' from 64 to 65 to get into collage! He said 'Praise God! I said - 'Somebody was just being fair!' He didn't like that.

the other woman told me she had a 'miracle' on the weekend, she was able to talk to her fiend on a cell phone where there is supposed to not be any reception and the phone connected and she was able to talk to her friend before she went in the hospital! Pancreas cancer at age 56) She also said 'praise God"! I didn't say anything.

My god - I used to say the same things!! It sounds so stupid to me now and I have to really 'contain' myself because these people pay my mortgage!!

Yeah I know the feeling, I am amazed this upset me so much. Truth is not so long ago we were also not allowed to buy booze on the lard's day and at one time during sanctions, on sundays if you were traveling long distance, there was like a levy of 5% if you had to fill up on a sunday.

We pretty much secular now but 95% of our Tee Vee and the religious channels we get are ALL American - thank you USA. I have not watched Tee Vee for over a year now and my wife only watches SA soapies.

I have to really 'contain' myself because these people pay my mortgage!!

I know, I came out to a client last year when the topic of religion came up and told her I was an atheist, all of a sudden, the job went to shit and I was suspect even though I completed the job to her satisfaction. She was a marginal xian not attending daily but the untimely death of her husband had her needing to believe that she would see him again.

This is what really pisses me off, if the topic ever comes up, we are supposed to switch to stealth mode and keep our mouths shut for fear of "offending" them. I mean I knew here husband had died, her nephew was there when I started the job and is an ordained minister and happened to hear that he was ministering to her about this. She then brought this up in conversation and asked which church I went to. I saw this coming and tried to change the conversation before it got to this but when the question came, I was honest and simply stated I was an ex christian and now an atheist. Boy did that upset her, how was it possible to be one then toss it all.

I should have simply said I do not talk about these things but she kept probing, assimilating, inferring etc. Then of course all the crap came out and as usual it was people that let me down. I told her that I had done extensive research and come to the conclusion that it it all bogus and hoped to leave it at that. She persisted, just like the woo woos here thinking they are also omnifuckingeverything concerning our experiences.

In a nutshell, I do not encounter this regularly but fuck it does not take long before someone will witness to you how great the lard is if they are a woo woo.

I guess I am just too damn honest about my thoughts and feelings.

It is this double standard that pisses me off. Man, you can have as many invisible friends as you want but just do not try and introduce me to them.

This must be the day of Christian hell for me. I just finished another client and this woman is under soooooo much stress, you wouldn't believe it. She just said to me: ''The devil won't leave me alone and the lord must want me to learn some lessons''. I told her that her family was making her crazy - not the devil, and the only lesson she had to learn was to stop rescuing their 'sorry' asses!

Thank god my next two clients are drinkers!!

Which means that there's a team on the other end that god hates. Screw practice, make 'em pray all next week.

I love the "then why did god fuck 'em up in the first place" questions.

A very nice lady who goes to my mom's church recently passed away. She had battled stage four cancer and had even been in remission for a while. A couple of months ago she is going around talking about how gawd healed her.

She had a relapse and died relatively quickly. I told my wife that evening, "It sure was bad about god killing Barbara." She knows how my mind works and just rolled her eyes. I said, "Well, ya can't have it both ways."

Yeah, it is odd how the woo woos cling to life using medicine to boot when the pearly whites await them. Why not just give up on the natural life w/o any scientific help and jes go to gawd and all?

Know why?

They do not even believe the BS they think they believe in. Surely with the built-in suicide is eternal damnation waiver, getting a terminally warrantied illness should actually demonstrate to them just how much gawd loves them and wants them up there sucking his dick asap.

I guess the built-in NATURAL HUMAN SECULAR instinct of survival as long as possible can override gawd's will?

Who you gonna call (if that is an option)? 911 or fall to your knees and pray to gawd?

The only miracle is that in spite of all the prayers and supplications, god never comes through (except for sports, parking spaces at walmart etc.) and yet they still believe in him?

Most pastors I've known wouldn't have mentioned anything about it because, presumably, the Chilean miners were Catholics.

In Italy, nobody would see the hypocrisy. Well, they might see it, but they wouldn't consider it the least bit remarkable. Leading conservative religious politicians can be caught banging hookers and snorting coke and most people won't give a shit, it's not like here in America.

I don't know that Chile is like that, because Italy is definitely Italy, but it's safe to say that those Catholic countries really are different from the dour Protestant lands we mostly come from. (Although I'm not sure what to say about cold foggy Ireland or Poland.) They seem much more laid back and casual about their religious baggage, and they don't possess our same concepts of hypocrisy and contradiction. No wonder that German tight-ass Martin Luther threw such a hissy fit!

It's times like this that makes you want to become a douche and sarcastically ask them why their god gave her cancer again but maturity and sensativity overides it.

My daughter was diagnozed with a brain tumor 3 years ago, and I have therefore read a lot of stories from other parents in the same position.

And all the stories form christian parents goes like this:

  1.
  2. My child has cancer - we need to pray
  3. It is operable - god has given us a miracle
  4. The brain surgeon could not gt it all (we need to pray more), but it is probably benign - A miracle!!
  5. It was not benign at all, but it is treatable - this is a miracle.
  6. I has shrunk - the miracle has happened, god is good.
  7. It came back - we will have another miracle. God will not let us down
  8. The child is dying, but we are sure god will save him/her.
  9. The child died - Praise God and Jesus - now he/she is fully healed and is in heaven

........

I swear this is not exaggerated. I understand why parents need support in such a crisis, but this?

And I read a story of a 14 year old girl with a very agressive and malignant tumor, who praised the lord for giving her a miracle - that he let her keep her hair in spite of the chemo.

I was sick into my non-existing soul.

My daughter was operated by a world-class brain surgeon and has come through without any long-term problems.

I hear ya. But since the miners were probably Catholic, why would our fundamentalist preachers claim Jesus was in there with them? They're going to hell just like the rest of us ;)

Thanks Margee,

There is really no story, I am not even ex-christian. Life-long atheist in a mostly secular society, but I am very interested in the way religion corrupts all and everything.

This site and specially the forums are fascinating, as are the joy and relief of most who gets out of the sects. Almost feeling jealous.

Welcome to the forum Soren, and your grammar is good enough for us folk.

It seems this happens all over the world. I recall now that there was a girl here in SA very young and there was a huge fundraiser for her to go to the USA, live concert and all with the musicians giving up their time free and a golf challenge where $180k was raised.

So a year later the radio station that organized this calls the mother up and all she has is praise for the lard, nevermind the number of folk who were moved by the kids story to donate, go to the concert, the aircraft that flew here family to the USA, the doctors and nurses that used science to perform the treatment and she is in remission now so they defaulted to man helping man as opposed to giving gawd a chance. Well they made the right decision as if gawd was to intervene she would probably be dead already.

If the mother considered her privilege and realized there a thousands of cases like this where the parents have no means or are not born into a society where people can make a difference, why does god not take care of them? Surely they need a real miracle.

How these folk think they can twist a god's arm when he states (via man of course) that he creates light and darkness, good and evil etc. GOD DON"T GIVE A SHIT because he does not exist. Young children that die from these horrible diseases are all because one silly bitch and an equally silly husband decided to disobey ol' fucking yahwe we are told.

I have looked into the eyes of innocence in children, it is just sad we adults fuck them up with fairy tales.

The woo woos have no logical answers to these questions as there are none. When the child dies, it is in heaven and thus a placebo to the mourners that they have gone to a better place.

Had this happened to me when I was a believer to one of my kids, I would have been out of that madhouse long time ago.
