I would agree they are fascists in disguise too.

It's one of the all-too-convenient delusions of the 20th century that fascism = swastikas and hatred of jews, hence IF NOT swastikas_at_every_corner THEN NOT fascism. Along with other crap, like IF NOT capitalism (pure, unrestrained) THEN socialism (eeeeebil), it "serves" to keep us from understanding the world as it is.

That is not including that most Americans don't understand the difference among socialism, marxism, communism, or fascism--they tend to use them interchangably. Hell, I didn't understand the differences until I got out of the right wing echo chamber and started thinking for myself.

If you were to ask an average American, they would probably think they live in a purely capitalist society.

Bush/Cheney, Paulson at Treasury 2008 TARP/QE1/$16trillion in loans at 0.25% was 100% butt covering Socialism for all the failed American business enterprises (most of them) and laissez faire capitalism on steroids for the rest of we poor Americans. :ugh:

The extreme Right and Left are extreme precisely because they do not trust citizens with freedom. Both are eager to force their vision of America on the American people, rather than allow the future to unfold organically from the actions of a free people.

As a non American who has visited many times, married an American and now living in America I can say that both your observations are pretty much what I have seen.

From being told that Obama wants to bring in socialism because (he is a communist and) because the whole public health and that he is a fascist. Few actually realised that in Australia we do have public health and it works damned good. So I figure he must be a communist fascist that wants to bring in socialism like Australia...

I recently had to explain to my MIL that America is not a capitalist economy, its a mixed economy.

actually no....that would be fascist policy. The banks basically said give us the money cheap or we fail and everyone loses their money.

Socialism wouldn't have removed the regulations on the bank that allowed them to get into the mess in the first place.

Communism would've taken direct control over the banks.

the effect of either on the US taxpayer is roughly the same, though.

oddly I find myself agreeing with legion here.

While I think there are certain things that "should" happen. (public health care for example) I do beleive that the best road forward is in freedom and trust in the choices we each have to make.

Edit: on topic. That is an awesome and slightly depressing book.

That's why I always look at the extremes of any point of view or ideology. If its close to the extremes its probability of failure or being wrong is almost 1.

And it works too.

I trust citizens with freedom, but not absolute freedom. Anyone who does is a fool. Lemmings running over a cliff is an example of a future unfolding organically.

... not absolute freedom.

What do you think the average American would do if granted exemption from the law? Maybe go to the airport and steal some purses and wallets? :HaHa:

My worries are not quite so mundane. It is not really individuals I would be concerned about. I could see gangs terrorizing people (more than they do now), corporations raping the environment and ripping people off (more than they do now). Government is an impediment to a host of evils that would be freely expressed otherwise.

Look at L.A. where the police don't want to go. There's your answer. Is that what you want of all of America?

Fast forward twenty years.

My kid introduced legislation to keep your violent fuckwit kid turned adult into a street beggar because he didn't have the brains to secure his future.

thus the gene pool is thinned. Darwinism in action.

American fascism has been around for decades, increasing in religious strength over the last 35 years. That was about when protestant denominations began the push to reunify or establish a reliance with the Catholic church, become one body in principle and gather enough strength to defeat leftist (liberal) legislation. It is the church's last ditch effort to control or destroy American politics. The fight for America's Presidency has only just begun. Hard core religious extremist will pop up now again, such as the event in Oslo, Norway, not that I think he had the Christian church's support, just the contrary. Non-aggressive protests and demonstrations are the only way to sway public opinion. I one side is easily viewed as the injured party, that party will win sympathy for its view, or religion. Public opinion turns against the war of the poverty-stricken that costs the lives of children in its revenge. Whether right or wrong, even victors are not always remembered favorably.
