Conventions And Religion

So I went to a convention this past weekend. It was an anime convention, though it had the usual non-Japanese video games and such as part of it. This is actually the first convention I have gone to since declaring myself as a Deist. Though I've been to conventions before, this time was different.

Any of you who are deeply ingrained into the anime and video game fandom know that there are fandoms dedicated to gore, homosexual relationships, hentai (aka animated porn), demonic characters and themes, etc. In fact, sex in general is a HUGE part of adult-oriented anime. I am a fan of yaoi which basically means I support romantic and sexual pairings of male characters. I have loved it since 6th grade. However, every convention I've ever gone too, I've been too afraid to buy the fan art books for this type of thing (aka doujinshi). This year though, I bought my first one without an ounce of guilt or fear of my parents discovering my "sick and perverted" obsession. In fact, I was kind of giddy. It only took 21 years...

Another thing that got me to thinking was Yugioh!. For those of you not in the know, it's a card game with complicated rules and strategies that you play against other players. This card game grew into a kids TV show and now there are four series based around the whole concept of playing card games. While the show may be a bit ridiculous the card game is fun. The monsters in this particular game are about 70% dark and evil looking in some way shape or form. I remembered that when the card game came out when I was about 8 or so, my best friends at the time weren't allowed to have Yugioh cards because their mother claimed that they were "Satanic." Now that I think about it, I really have no clue how the art on a piece of paper could influence someone to hail Satan or start cutting or something. Like, it has a KIDS show. Magic: The Gathering doesn't even have that. This whole concept of skulls and dragons being evil and influencing children to worship the devil makes absolutely no sense now.

Half the time, in the TV show, the protagonists have these "dark" creatures as the star card in their deck. Among them: Dark Magician, Yubel (a dude who was turned into a transvestite demon with one boob that haunts the main character), Blue Eyes White Dragon, Red Eyes Black Dragon, Slifer The Sky Dragon, Obelisk the Tormentor, Stardust Dragon, Red Dragon Archfiend, Number 17: Leviathan Dragon...dragons are a big thing if you couldn't tell, even though they are considered symbolism for "evil" or something. Yugioh! even has a whole spoof series that makes fun of the show. So, where at one time I might've agreed that Yugioh was some sort of plot to turn the world's youth in to Satanists, I now will just pick up a card and simply "Well that's some nice art on that card."

I then realized I was astonished at the fact that there weren't Christian protests going on at any of these conventions I've been to. With all the crossdressing, dressing up in skimpy clothing, sexually centered cartoons, homosexual fandoms and "demonic" influences, this should be crawling with annoying evangelicals. Yet, it isn't. Why? Are they not aware that this type of thing exists? Do they just pretend it doesn't? When they're out protesting against abortion and homosexual marriage, they are completely ignoring the fact that there are people indulging in every sin imaginable right under their noses.

Not that I'm complaining that there aren't enough Christians. This is the first place I could just be open about my beliefs and no one would berate me with Bible verses. There's acceptance at these conventions. I can talk to anyone there about nearly everything and it's not awkward. Sometimes, I feel more at home there than I do at my own home. It sucks that they only happen a few times a year. Well, guess I have to wait until January for the next one. wink.png

Yeah, especially when that lady shaked her head in that video saying in her head, "yeah mr. preacher, you're right. I wish I saw this before. My poor kid. Now I see. Pokedemons are gonna get my son, o no!"

ConureDelSol,

I grew up during a time when Dungeons and Dragons was thought to be Satanic by one of my grandmothers. Over a decade ago, I and some others from an email list had a bunch of debates with a fundamentalist preacher who thought Pokemon was Satanic, like the video upthread shows. The Hell House documentary shows that the kids in that Assembly of God thought that Magic: The Gathering was Satanic. I have no doubt that some Christians think Yugioh! is, too.

I doubt they'd protest a convention over it, though. Unless maybe it's Pastor Phelps.

YOU'RE ALL GOING TO HELL!!!

I remember Pokemon being banned for me growing up. Anti-Christian or too worldly or something no doubt, I never thought to ask. The Simpsons was another one. I guess in 20 years time something else will become the chief vessel of Satan spreading his vile messages and infesting the innocent minds of our beloved young ones with his hatred of all that is holy.

And why does that preacher remind me of a young George Bush?

Pokemon didn't make me demonic enough. So I guess Satan had me learn about languages to get my adult stuff closer to demonic symbols. You know that Satan, he's always trying to get you. You won't even know it, he's the scary man conspiring against you behind every corner.
