New Atheist Starting To Hate Churches

We all know the ovious reasons like honor killings and prejudice that make all of us hate church but in the months after my deconversion I have turned from looking at the church with sympathy and seeing the members as mental cases who need help. Its turned into a bitter hatred honestly. Im not the kind of person who is this way so i need to vent. There is a church on every corner and because of it this myth is perpetuated. They want to invoke God in the pledge sing God bless america and quietly slip in the idea that some being is guiding the well being of our country.

I see people who want to hear your situation and pray for you as just being plain old NOSEY. I see people who feel the spirit as delusional actors going for a grammy.."And the winner for getting as close to christ as possible through the spirit is...!". Those people could never be told that there is nothing there. They are just acting and theyll make themselves believe anything. They have downplayed the frailness of life. Who cares if you die when you are a christian your going to an even BETTER place. Its as if this is the pre-season and the real fun doesnt start till you die.

God comes first. That means your spouse and family are in second place. And the world is satans realm. They miss the world for what it really is and how beautiful it is and how dare I say "Blessed" they really are. If you thought you had good fortune look at what happened to venus. How degrading is it to put an imaginary friend (if you call it that) in a more prominent position that the ones you love most in the world who is right in front of your face.

Not to go into politics but, a few months ago I was a right wing conservative and now I've become a...... d-d-d-d-democrat. I had to shift from being concerned with my individual rights and the government meddling in my life but now I am more concerned about the survival of the species and society as a whole since we are on our own. we know to some degree what works and what doesn't in society and it will only get more and more accurate as time goes on. We know religion to be false so lets kill it off and now wait for it to slowly wither away.

Part of me sees society as too STUPID to know whats best for it and left alone a nuclear bomb will wipe out the best species we know of. We CAN survive long enough that everyone is an atheist or free thinker. We can live long enough to figure out things for certain rather than have Agnostics (nothing against agnostics). We would be able to travel to other galaxies. It may sound stupid to anyone close minded but "I HAVE DREAM!" Think 50 years ago we hadn't gone to the moon and now look at us....imagine 500 years from now. We could be hunting for candidate planets to migrate to in Andromeda. But no.... Jesus is going to rescue us so it doesn't matter. FOOLS!. I'd like to see a law that every church be with NO STONE LEFT ONE UPON ANOTHER. I would like to see a law religion taught along the same lines as mythology. Humans don't stand a chance with religion in the way.

Imagine a society when no one is concerned about the "sanctity of life". I don't think its far fetched to think that in 500 years our life spans could be DOUBLE as we use science to find cures for heart disease, cancer, and other ailments. Maybe there will even be a cure for stupidity by then. Religion has ruined my head and every day I have a mental battle on the inside as I reconstruct who I am..or who i thought I was. I probably could have had it figured out by now. All because of indoctrination. My life is slowly going to be ruined as I have to redefine myself and come out to family and friends. Its my wish that no one else have to go through this. CAN I GET AN AMEN!!!!

I deconverted from xtianity about 6 months ago and I have developed a hatred of churches as well. I'm trying really hard not to hate the individual xtians, too. This is easy to do with the ones I love but not as easy when I see people like Rick Santorum and Pat Robertson on television. I'm also still very much in the closet with my deconversion, although I do not attend church. The only reason I would even step foot in a church would be to attend a wedding or funeral. A xtian friend was talking the other day about being descended from Adam and Eve. I'm sorry, but this is just fucking ridiculous. And I used to believe the same thing! Society would be MUCH more advanced if people did not believe the horse shit they believe.

Parts of this post reminded me of this scene from Family Guy:

I also am dealing with the seething hatred of churches and I have a very VERY hard time not outright hating Christians in general. I know it's not how I'm supposed to look at them, but I can't seem to see them as anything other than liars, deluded assholes, etc. This is the only place I can really vent. When my mind begins going through all the things Christianity has RUINED for humanity, I want to punch an evangelist in the face. Maybe, he'd lose his balance and fall into a flaming pit for good measure.

I'm planning on learning meditation as a way to calm myself, but from what I remember, most here say it just takes time to get over it.

I hated churches while I was a Christian, that didn't go down well with the fundies who tried their best to make me go back fun_84.gif

I posted a similar thread a while ago, but during that thread's short existence I came across a quote that really helped me.

We must respect the other fellow's religion, but only in the sense and to the extent that we respect his theory that his wife is beautiful and his children smart.

At the end of the day, I believe that the pastors genuinely believe they're doing God's work and if it makes people happy, it's their loss really.

just keep trying to remember how you felt when you were a christian and someone ragged on your religion. it's hard not to hate, and i'm dealing with this issue myself, but it really is counterproductive.

I'm with you guys. Once I started to question the BS church became more than I could stand. Except for weddings and funerals, Homey don't play that.

It seems to me that hatred of christianity is something we all go through as we become unbelievers. Just about everyone here has expressed having a hatred/resentment of christianity early on in the process. I wonder if there are stages, similar to the stages of grief, we go through when we give up a lifetime's worth of christian indoctrination and the comfort of being told that we aren't responsible for our own actions. Suddenly, there is no dogma, only free-thinking; we also discover the truth that we, ourselves, are the ONLY ones responsible for our behavior.

After 9 and a half years, I can say that I still have resentment against and hatred towards certain aspects of christianity but it seems to be less acute than it was in the beginning.

I think something else that is important is to use this space to vent while restraining oneself in the public square. The term atheist is frequently seen as a pejorative, and sometimes justifiably so. Just as we dislike the sidewalk preachers, our ideas are not always welcome and are resented when they are uninvited.

Here's hoping you keep going and find your way to be a s-s-s-s-ocialist......and maybe even someday an a-a-a-a-a-narchist.

Keep up the good work, my friend.

The title of this thread tickled me because

I'm on old atheist and I STILL hate churches!

And I'm sure I always will.

I only step foot in them for weddings, funerals, and now (unfortunately) for my grandchildren's school plays/events.

While I love my xtian family and friends, there are times I really want to shake some sense into them.

Every time I see a new church being built, I think to myself "Well there goes ANOTHER piece of property wasted -- no incoming tax revenue and a lot more BS being preached."

When I see xtians, especially xtian politicians, on the news blathering their idiocy and trying to force their religion on everyone else, I can't tell you how pissed off I get!

/end rant

LOL

(I think I'm in a mood because it's easter weekend and I'm sick of hearing all their $hit!)

We all have different experiences in xianty and our own path to walk away from the damage. For me it wasn't anger, but to many it is and understandably so.

Xians expect atheists to be angry. After all, how could atheists be (worth) anything without god? If we are angry, then they can easily write us off. Loving atheists just confuse the shit out of them.

Amen! I'm angry at the individuals mindlessly chowing down on the spiritual equivalent of Lil Debbie snack cakes than I am at the general institution of church. I'll admit it quickly enough. OP, I hope you find something constructive to do with all that anger. Being here seems like a good start. :) Welcome.

I certainly agree that public defiance toward religion may seem counterproductive (onlybecause xians think morals are given from god and you have to be saved before you know that its unacceptable to kill) and to see one without god acting civilized would boggle their mind. FYI Im a very loving individual and would never ridicule publicly. but inside I am on fire. I feel deceived and like I have my life taken from me because of xianity. as mentioned earlllier this may be a phase and part of the initial shock of finding that i had the wool pulled over my eyes. buti dont buy that it gives people comfort and hope anymore because it all comes at a huge expense.

I went through the angry stage first. Next, I went through the mockery stage, and now I think I'm in the pity stage.

Posted

I hope to get to the pity stage soon. I flip flop from hating everything Christian to not being able to stop my from laughing while at church. I'm so mad at Christianity I want to get a 666 on the back of my hand. Pity would be an improvement.

Churches are the focal points of religion. Monuments of gluttonous greed for money and power, dominion over others. Many are huge structures designed to make one feel insignificant and tiny, weak in the presence of god's magnitude. And, they should be taxed as the hungry business they are. Not many provide charitable services for their neighborhoods. Some may if one is a member. Some do not even provide any type of help for their members but suck in all their money. Churches are pyramid schemes--might even be the source of the 'Trickle-Down Economics'. You have to be worthy enough, an elite faithful xtian, in order to become privy to how the money flows through the church. Not many keep records, except for a few people, not many christians know how much their churches rake in.

Folks,

There is another way to look at this. Instead of hating them, find a way to profit from them at THEIR expense.....wink.png

Churches, their leaders, their members, their culture is EASY to manipulate. In fact (this is counterintuative) I like there to be plenty of members and healthy churches. I can, with the right mixture of persuasion and bullshit, get them to LOVE me and get them to do just about anything I want...within reason of course. You just have to couch it in the proper Evangelical, Catholic, Mormon narrative...think about it...wink.png

Hmm, have you ever tried panhandling outside a church?

I imagine that would be fairly successful, provided the pastors don't get you evicted.

Or, arrested. The Mormons own all of the city block around the temple and have the area under surveillance with cameras and will have anyone they don't like, such as gays and lesbians kissing on their block, they have them arrested for trespassing on private property. I imagine they would have people arrested who panhandle too? It would be interesting to see how far the charity of Westboro Baptist Church runs.

Yeah I don't hate churches or christians, the exception being a greedy televangalist, in some ways I wish there was a hell just for them. Most churches are places for people who lack understanding and I always cherished my time in church around like minded believers, its one of the few things I miss.
