I've probably wasted about 2 weeks on what is now clearly another vendor's mistake. It's taken some serious detective work, combined with correlation analysis to track it down, but I'm damn well convinced it's the result of failing to update configuration parameters from one baseline to the next with a third party. (in non-geek talk, someone else fucked up and wasted gobs of my time as a result) On top of that, I made the mistake of duking it out with some Biblical inerrantist idiot on another sight, and I'll never have those two hours back.
