par4dcourse
I wrote these lyrics a few years ago for a Vietnam Vets celebration in DC that my band played at. It's the story of an old vet set up at a yard sale. Note: I am not nor do I claim to be a veteran. Slow country ballad, Rummage Sale (Melton/Pinnell) How much for that “Army stuff”? That’s a helluva question you’ve got there son. Truth is, I don’t rightly know, been a long time since I toted a gun. I know you came to this rummage sale lookin for bargains and such, But I think you’ll be surprised to find this stuff cost so much Draw up a chair there boy, if you care to make an old man’s day Your all of what, fifteen? No one cares anyway What’s that box worth? Not much to you no doubt. Let me study on it a minute, then you and me, we’ll figure it out See that stuff my friend, took a big chunk out of my life. Cost me four years, my left leg, and eventually my wife. She couldn’t put up with the war still ragin’ in my mind. I don’t really blame her; I can’t stand it myself half the time That’s the reason I’m selling this old collection of mine, Is to stay alive another day, you get good at that over time You’re getting a little antsy there son listening to me is rough Stay put just another minute, my story will be over soon enough So back to your question boy, how much does it cost? How do you put a price on years, friends, and lives all lost? Uncle Sam said he needed me, and that’s all I needed to know. See I paid for all that’s in that box along long time ago. Just take the box, son.
