Guest Guest_sightedone_*
Hi all, I would love to get opinions from all sides on the question of whether the gnostic writings are evidence of existence of Jesus. I don't want to know anything about whether he was God or anything like that, I have made up my mind on that one, I just want to know whether gnostic writings should be taken as proof that Jesus the man was real. My opinion, which is not based on any concrete data whatsoever, is that it isn't. If you all have any links pertaining to the subject, I would appreciate that as well. Thanks guys. Mythra
Perhaps this should be moved to the Lion's Den? Hello sightedone. I'm not sure how the gnostic writings help support a historical man jesus. If anything, I see them as leading a person to the opposite conclusion. It would have been hard for Simon Magus, Valentinus, Marcion, and others to spread and perpetuate the belief that Jesus had been a sort of phantom, when there were still people around who had seen him and known him in real life. If you'd like to research the gnostic writings and writers online, see HERE Another very good source is the book "The Gnostic Gospels" by Elaine Pagels.
