WaitingInfinity
I abstained from pre-marital sex (I made out with a friend with benefits quite often, but my parents didn't know that), didn't read/watch banned entertainment (Harry Potter, Twilight, but LOTR was fine), didn't sing/listen to secular music (I heard some at school, but that was it. My parents listened to secular music when they were growing up, but their excuse was that they didn't have Christian music back then.), and didn't wear extravagant outfits (very modest, dresses to the knees at least, no skinny jeans, no low-cut shirts). I had mostly non-Christian friends. I didn't know what birth control even was until I started reading up on it in my late teens. Kosher/non kosher wasn't an issue. Now I have broken all of the ones I didn't. Except for the sex one. But I am gonna break that one as soon as I get to the secular college where my boyfriend is. Woot woot! Super Moderator TheRedneckProfessor Posted January 9, 2014 Super Moderator Share Posted January 9, 2014 I obeyed all the commandments on the list, except the kosher one. RaLeah
I was thinking more along the lines of the Ten Commandments.... Let's see... those are: No other Gods before Me. No idols or graven images. (Unless God tells you to make a golden snake on a pole to cure your diseases.) Don't take God's name in vain. (Which might mean no swearing, but might also mean don't call yourself God's follower and then behave poorly.) Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy. Honor your parents. Don't murder. (Unless God commands you to go commit genocide. Then you have to.) Don't commit adultery. (But, um, it's okay to have multiple wives I guess.) Don't steal. (Unless it's from your enemy and God tells you to.) Don't bear false witness against your neighbor. (Which some people interpret as don't commit perjury and others as don't lie or gossip.) Don't covet anything (someone else's wife, house, etc.) (Again, unless it's your enemy, then you can envy his land flowing with milk and honey and go take it for yourself because God promised you that you could have it, even though it currently belongs to someone else.) So... I haven't murdered or stolen anything or committed perjury, and I honor my parents, and I don't begrudge people their stuff, but the rest is kind of pointless. I'm good at the "love your neighbor" parts of the rules, but I don't keep any rules pertaining to loving or worshipping God. (But since God is allowed to over-rule the love your neighbor parts of his commandments whenever He feels like it, I think He's a big inconsistent jerk anyway.) Then there are the seven deadly sins: Lust Gluttony Greed Sloth Wrath Envy Pride Huh. That sort of reads like things Americans excel at. Kind of the Great American check list: Have you ever seen a commercial for beer or a print add for fashion that didn't appeal to lust? We're also one of the most obese nations on earth. It started ironically to say "Greed is good" but pretty much everyone on Wall Street now embraces this with sincerity. Sloth is still frowned on, but we like to accuse everyone ELSE of it--"welfare queens" or "trust-fund babies" or "gold diggers" or "entitled rich" Wrath... well, just watch a few hours of "news" or listen to right wing radio and see how much anger gets stoked up. Envy... Hmmm, I can't think of any other reason why people would care about Kim Kardashian, etc. or worship celebrities so much. We're all supposed to be "proud to be an American" as if we think we are super exceptional compared to everyone else on the planet. But don't forget, we're a Christian nation.... (I'm being sarcastic, in case I need to say it.)

falemon
For me it was the sex one, though it's the only commandment that they really care about, to be honest. I mean it's the most unnatural rule to follow! In terms of movies I always watched whatever I wanted, and before I committed fully to christianity I became bored with commercial music so I listened to mostly classical and the classics. I gave up swearing and excessive drinking. In terms of friends, I had a small circle of friends and half of them were centred around drinking, so I sort of drifted, and the rest I kept in touch with. Now it did affect quite a lot of relationships in the sense that I couldn't rave, though I did go to clubs to mingle as I've always been independent. A few times I had to untag myself and when ladies would insist on dancing I would turn them down as politely as I could, because I didn't want to step over the undefined boundary of having a good time and sinning To be honest I don't really want to think of all the things I gave up as it's a tad bit depressing lol And the salsa Damn, I turned down some beauties :'(

MetalFace
I kept the sex one... sort of? Maybe? Ehh, not really, now that I think on it. Hell, I know some fundies that don't believe in holding hands of all things! Some of these idiots' bullshit even astounds me, at times! So glad I'm free from their insanity. I know I never murdered anyone, so I think I'm good that way. I did constantly beat my slave, like a good like christian. That's in teh buy-bull. Tollo
I kept the last three, emphasis on the "openly" in the LGBT one... not that my friends weren't smart enough to figure out. I pretty much did everything else before deconverting, except that I just kept it a secret. I was a bad christian.

It was so easy to get god to forgive you...all ya had to do was ask........ I was very similar. For many years I constantly felt guilty, and was always worried about sinning. Eventually I realized that God would either accept me for who I was, or not. Then I gradually stopped following more and more commandments. Shortly thereafter, I stopped believing entirely. pawn
I was never a legalistic type of Christian. My vote is "none of the above". I also smoked a lot of kosher weed, and hung out with god while I was high as shit. I was a very liberal Christian, which is thankfully why it was eventually so easy for me to deconvert. If you don't want to make god frown, you got to carry your cross with a happy face and do the hard, meaningless, nonsensical toil. If that sounds like too much for you, just think of all the imaginary things god has done for you and just be grateful.
NeverAgainV
I get depressed thinking about the good times & relationships I gave up because I wanted to live up to the holy standard....no sex, no drugs, no drinking...etc ah well. at least I was a bit crazy during my Catholic days before the bible cult, but still there was the Catholic guilt. Once I converted into fundyland Baptist/Calvinism the rules just got more strict and oppressive. Anyhoo, it wasn't on the list, but I did not celebrate that pagan holiday Xmas while in the bible cult or Easter or Halloween. I NEVER watched porn, didn't watch subversive movies like V for Vendetta or Harry Potter. LOL! there was other bullshit rules, i really really tried to live up to the standard, to the detriment of my own happiness and well being. I guess that's why I hate that religion, they stole so many years from my life and i was so stupid to go along with it.
amateur
I found one! I didn't openly identify as LGBT, but that's because I wasn't. But I had friends that were and none of that ever bothered me in any way, and I knew the "Amazon ABC's." I hate condoms. Ick.
