Mythra
My kinda guy. If more funerals were like that, I might start attending funerals again. I got tired of going to "fundyrals" that included an altar call.
Mythra
Just once I'd like to see a funeral where the pastor told the truth (about how he saw it) "Well, Maggie's husband Fred wouldn't attend church with her here. Fred thought the bible was full of lies and manipulations. Fred is now suffering in hell where he will be forever and ever." Instead they say: well, who are we to say? Only God knows these about these things.
amateur
In my death instructions, there is no funeral, viewing or service. Direct cremation. My kids already know that when I die, they can cremate me, then take any remaining money, split it, go out for a nice dinner together, and do whatever they wish with my ashes. They know I love them. That's all that matters.
older
A good one. But in all seriousness, everyone needs to have advanced directives in place including powers of attorney for health and finances, as well as a will. Even if you are young. Do it now. And write a "letter of instruction," which includes stuff you might not have in your will, such as what this guy wrote about his remains. Set up a trust if you have any assets of any consequence. Probate costs can wipe out an estate in a hurry.
rjn
That was really, really beautiful. Maybe I'm just soft-hearted, but that actually moved me! Now, for my funeral... I guess I'd want any useful parts to be donated (you can forget about the liver!) for whatever good reasons, and then I'd like the remains cremated and have my ashes spread by the wind in a beautiful setting. Yeah, I know that most likely there won't be any "me" left around to care for whatever happens, but I still find that to be an appealing concept, and since most of my friends are hippies they'd probably agree. The coolest thing would of course be a fullblown Viking-funeral: burn me on a bonfire! And I want this song to be performed damn it! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0PvZGVPiJU Beyond that, well, I think I share the sentiments of the guy who wrote that blogpost. Deyr fé,deyja frændr, deyr sjalfr it sama,ek veit einn,at aldrei deyr:dómr um dauðan hvern.
