I recall an interview with Marvin Minsky (back in the late 80's, I think) where he imagined this scenario happening sometime in the 21st century.

 

Two computers are in a room, communicating electronically with each other and not relying on the spoken word.  

One is called Bob and the other Fred.  A person enters the room, walks over to Bob, taps lightly on him and says,

"Hey!  How are you two guys, doin?"

 

Minsky then looked at the camera and said that in the space of time it took for the person to say those words, Bob and Fred would have communicated more information between each other than had been written down in the whole of human history.
