The equivalent of Jewish royalty, being descended from every famous Jewish person who ever lived; after a dream, Joseph marries a pregnant woman he has never had sex with.

 

He is told the baby should be called Jesus, which is not a Jewish name but comes from Ancient Greek.

 

Shortly afterwards, three men he does not know turn up bearing gifts after the baby was born, and he never made any connection.

 

Claims of divine paternity, in short, are well-attested, at least among the Greek elite.

     The idea would be these stories would come around in an ex-post-facto fashion so, assuming it's all grounded in some reality, Joseph would have been long dead when this story was finally invented.  So Mary gets knocked up, by Joseph, and the baby is born.  Joseph drops dead at some point.  Mary, or perhaps jesus, tells the "real story" of how the spirit came around and was the real father and not Joseph establishing some special and magical paternity after the fact and after Joseph isn't around any longer to dispute it.  Joseph isn't an idiot since the timeline for him is perfectly normal.  He's just turned into an idiot through the magic of a fiction.
