Astronomers detect a second planet orbiting two stars (phys.org) Approximately 75% of the stars in the Milky Way galaxy are binaries. So there is a reasonable chance of some of them possessing systems of planets. But for now we can only detect the massive gas giants orbiting these paired stars. Astronomy is mostly an observational science, a profession that many might call Nerdish in regard to all the detail and advanced math that can sometimes go into it. Maybe these goofy acronyms might make astronomers feel that they might have a little "cool" to their interests with such goofy acronyms. Also goofy acronyms might help in remembering the dozens of different programs that have such acronyms.
