A Vision Not A Doctrine

A NEW CONCEPT TO COGITATE OVER:

We should not dwell but learn from past mistakes of mankind and look to improving the future. In my opinion there was one man, who had a vision in the 20th Century and his vision is viewed by many around the globe and influenced a lot of changes both in the 20th and 21st centuries. He should be made a Saint. Through his vision we can see a world where poverty, disease, greed and prejudice are things of the past. The eco balance of this planet is saved and all species protected. Money and religion are no longer part of the human culture, but man exists to better himself and follows one prime directive. His vision has managed to progress science technology in the way we would never have envisaged in the early part of the last century. His name is Gene Rodenberry and when he died his ashes were thrust into the stars where he belongs.

St. Gene created and produced the original TV series, Star Trek, which showed the human race united as one together with the first black woman in a prime position (which was totally unheard of at that time). The series has become so successful not only for the sci-fi adventure, but the underlying messages within. It appeals to people because it is not a doctrine but a vision. The ‘enemy’ aliens depicted in all the series are the failings in human traits, therefore no-one is really targeted. I have not avidly watched every series like a true Trekkie, but in any episode it was easy to identify and relate the evil to human error in today’s world. For example, an enemy alien group called the BORG capture any species and assimilate them into one collective that they do no think or act on their own and are controlled by one central brain. If one of the assimilated is attacked or eliminated, information about its ‘weakness’ is transmitted back to the central brain. That information is rapidly processed and the collective is immune to further similar attacks. The only way to rid the world of this kind of evil is to eliminate the central brain. Quite scary when viewed in that context! Sounds familiar? A given interpretation of this acronym is Bloody Organised Religious Groups!

The United Federation of Planets is on a mission of peace in search of new experiences where they embrace all alien cultures and creeds and do not interfere or enforce their ideals, but offer aid and guidance when needed. They exchange ideas and technology and form alliances to understand the reason for evil thus finding peaceful solutions. They avoid conflict and killing and only fight in defence as a last resort when under attack minimising casualties on both sides. From Star Trek we also learn that there is some truth in myths. So why is it so hard for mankind to accomplish St Gene’s vision? Yes, you have guessed it – greed, prejudice, money and power. :thanks:

So who is your favourite Alien?

And the Borg lives in peace within themselves, which is different than religious groups.

I think the Borg concept actually proves something else, and not religion, but that we can only get to a united society if we somehow manages to get a higher awareness of each others needs, wants, thoughts etc. If one suffer, everyone suffers. Read Asimovs sci-fi series, and especially the later ones, Foundations Edge and Foundation and Earth. Gaia is part of the answer.

Favorite alien? T'Pol. :yum:
