zuker12 Posted April 23, 2014 Posted April 23, 2014 Some of them are plain funny, but some have some very insane claims (like the Jesuits establishing Islam to kill and subjugate Jews and Jerusalem for the pope, the age old illuminati claims backed by guess who the first Satanic panic fakers Warnke and Todd). Did you ever get to read them? Were you converted by them? Have you attempted debunking them? Etc.
FreeThinkerNZ Posted April 23, 2014 Posted April 23, 2014 I was first exposed to them at the age of 8. They're not appropriate material for children IMO. But I have forgiven my parents, they must have thought anything with a xian message was inherently ok, having been indoctrinated themselves. Wordly music was considered much more dangerous for my young mind.
DoubtingNate Posted April 23, 2014 Posted April 23, 2014 IMO, they aren't really worth taking the time to debunk. However, they are pretty hilarious. Here are some of my favorites: Dark Dungeons (about the evils of D&D) Angels? (about the evils of Christian rock music. Satan's crash course in music history is classic!) The Last Generation (about the end of days) Big Daddy (about evolution. This one is just painful to read).
Thurisaz Posted April 23, 2014 Posted April 23, 2014 I've looked at many of them online right there on the chicken website. I've yet to see any German morontheist trying to impress anyone by handing them out, but if that happened to me one day... assuming I won't be too stunned by my disbelief that ZOMFG HE'S REALLY TRYING THIS SHIT!!!... I'd probably say "thank you for the unshakable proof that you're an idiot AND not worthy of even a second of my time".
zuker12 Posted April 23, 2014 Author Posted April 23, 2014 I hear they've been translated to over 100 languages, or something. On a side note, I found what this whole Albert Pike worshipping Lucifer thing is! It's a hoax, created by Leo Taxil. http://www.masonicinfo.com/taxil.htm Just because I am reading some debunking info on Jack CHick. I just thought about freemasonry the other day and that quote did stay in my head for some time. Well, on to point. http://www.masonicinfo.com/chick.htm http://www.catholic.com/documents/the-nightmare-world-of-jack-t-chick http://web.archive.org/web/20031001180142/http:/net2.netacc.net/~mafg/jtchick/jtc02.html How much money does Jack Chick make from his publications? Does anyone know? I'm just wondering if he is another type of money-scrounging preacher or if he genuinely believes his delusions.
Deva Posted April 23, 2014 Posted April 23, 2014 They are relics of my youth. As a teen I think I enjoyed reading them. They were entertaining. I still bought into a lot of the Christian stuff at that time. The drawings were so - out there.. Now, of course they seem very silly.
Thurisaz Posted April 23, 2014 Posted April 23, 2014 Good Lord, they have them in Germany too?? There are German translations for at least some of them... whether they are really "in use" here I don't know. A good friend of mine (Wiccan priest) got himself one a long time ago just to demonstrate to others (if needed) just how insane christianity can get... but I can't remember where from.
Bhim Posted April 23, 2014 Posted April 23, 2014 Funny you mention this, I just saw a single-card tract (not Chick brand) at Target yesterday. I thought about writing my usual message about the evil of eternal hell on it and leaving my own message for others. Maybe I should have. I decided to take it with me and throw it away, lest a weak-minded fool's life be ruined by the material's claim of fulfilled Bible prophecy.
thereisnoperfect Posted April 23, 2014 Posted April 23, 2014 I respond to them pretty much the same way I did as a Christian--with eyerolling and embarrassment and a desire to explain rhetoric to whoever is responsible.
Super Moderator buffettphan Posted April 23, 2014 Super Moderator Posted April 23, 2014 I was probably in my mid-30's when I saw the first one. It was a very anti-catholic tract and even though I was an ex-christian/ex-catholic (of the extremely liberal persuasion) by the time I saw the tract, the lies in it still made me furious. Actually, the tracts still make me angry because I know they're being given to vulnerable and/or gullible people who might take them seriously. I often see them left in stores and other public places around here. I gather all I can find and trash them.
Super Moderator TheRedneckProfessor Posted April 23, 2014 Super Moderator Posted April 23, 2014 I'm embarrassed to say that when I was a kid I bought into chick tracts hook, line, and sinker. They went along perfectly with the brand of christianity into which I was indoctrinated. If I saw one on the street today, I'd probably just tear it up and throw it away.
Fernweh Posted April 23, 2014 Posted April 23, 2014 Those things wander dangerously close to Poe's Law but I'm afraid they are actually serious.
xtify Posted April 23, 2014 Posted April 23, 2014 When I look at them now, they reaffirm the reasons why I am no longer a christian. Atheists should give them out. They really are dispicable, and illustrate christian fundamentalism as the evil that it is.

I used to go with the church youth group and leave them EVERYWHERE. There were even a few brave kids who toured a downtown Catholic cathedral and left them in the pews. This was with a youth pastor who even bragged about leaving cigarettes in the fingers of the statues of the Catholic churches..LOL. Don't mean to be offensive to any former Catholics but in a way, it was funny has hell. With our youth group we would always go downtown where the "cruisers" would hang out on the weekend. For those not familiar, "cruising" is when young people drive their cars to random parking lots and just hang out (in North Carolina it's the only activity that's more fun than "cow-tipping"). We'd litter the cars with chick tracts and try to strike up conversations with the other young people who were just hanging out. I only ever remember one person coming to youth group as a result of this type of evangelism, and that kid's parents and sister were already active Christians, so he might have ended up in youth group anyway.
DoubtingNate Posted April 23, 2014 Posted April 23, 2014 You guys should Definitely read the D&D one. Blackleaf, noooo! Although that part actually was kinda sad.
Super Moderator buffettphan Posted April 23, 2014 Super Moderator Posted April 23, 2014 This was with a youth pastor who even bragged about leaving cigarettes in the fingers of the statues of the Catholic churches..LOL. Don't mean to be offensive to any former Catholics but in a way, it was funny has hell. That's so funny. As a former catholic, I'm not at all offended. In fact, in 8th grade, my friends and I did that after school, still wearing our catholic school uniforms...lololol Never got caught either. It pays to be the sweet, nice girl who can be otherwise when the occasion calls for it. Sometimes.
Super Moderator buffettphan Posted April 23, 2014 Super Moderator Posted April 23, 2014 Get past the intro at about 1:40 minute. FUNNY AS HELL! I have watched the movie MANY TIMES I laugh my ass off every time I see it. You would probably appreciate the movie "Heaven Help Us". It came out in 1985. The story was about the antics of some boys at a Catholic high school in Brooklyn NY. Here is a clip of it: Such a funny movie. I haven't watched it in years, so I'd say a re-watch is long overdue. Thanks! .
Jedah Posted April 23, 2014 Posted April 23, 2014 Chick tracts are hilarious, always falling in the "So bad it's good" camp. On a serious note, they also do a good job of showing the Christian victim mentality. Every non Christian is always portrayed as ugly and unhappy, a reminder to how religion warps a persons perspective of reality. 1
Ro-bear Posted April 23, 2014 Posted April 23, 2014 I enjoy them. But when I put them right back where I found them, right next to the toilet, I feel like I have left a dirty needle with a little smack in it for some desperate person to harm himself with. 1
Deva Posted April 23, 2014 Posted April 23, 2014 Yeah that Dusty video is hilarious! The drawings in Chick Tracts are awesome. That one is probably one of the most extreme, very entertaining.
Roz Posted April 23, 2014 Posted April 23, 2014 At first I laughed along with Dusty as he read the chick tract. I've seen them around, but never really paid any attention to them. Then I remember that people are still passing these off to impressionable kids. Kids who were raised in Christian society and are already susceptible to being scared shitless. At that point I got angry and sad at the same time. I'm going through the chick tracts on their website now, and if I had to pick out the most absurd one (the 11.5 out of the 11s), it would be the "death cookie" dig against catholics and their wafers. I must now add this death cookie to the list of things I must eat.
Blood Posted April 23, 2014 Posted April 23, 2014 Like many, I was introduced to Chick tracts just by being public. People would leave them on bus stops, post offices, etc. I've got about 30 of them, collected over the years. They are a good introduction to American Christianity. Give your mind over to fundamentalists, or burn in hell. Great, uplifting message. I prefer the comic book size Crusaders series, in full color, with art by Fred Carter. Those are far superior to the tiny tracts.
