Doing good vs being "a Christian"

I watch a commentator from the south who posts to YouTube whose goal is to address the deep division we currently have in the country, and he just did one about the migrants being bussed by a Bible Belt governor to DC and dropped off in the freezing cold. He points out the deep hypocrisy of believers claiming to be followers of Jesus while electing and supporting those who practice quite the opposite to the clear teachings of Jesus. He then points to those who quickly showed up to give the migrants coats, shelter, food, and toys for the kids, and how that simple kindness by "leftists" is what has become missing in so many churches and in the actions and words of those that claim to worship Jesus. He references a popular song from 1996 "What If Jesus Comes Back Like That".

As one who no longer believes in the deity, but still sees the huge value in "feed the hungry; clothe the naked; visit the lonely; welcome the stranger; give one of your 8 coats to someone who is cold", I found the video refreshing. The commentator is likely a believer of some kind, but pushes kindness regardless of belief.

Although liberals talk a good game concerning the poor, so do many Christians and related Christian charities. Many atheists and agnostics around the world are also involved with the poor and charities via socialism and communism. As an theist I tend to feel more charitable now than when I was Christian. I worked (and am still working) for a charity for many years without pay as a conservative atheist. It often simply depends upon the individual IMO.

This is more of a political post than a non-religious post.

For instance I'm no longer Christian. And I would prefer to call them by what they are. Not migrants but Illegal immigrants. I saw it as a statement of protest to our illegal immigration policies being ignored by leftists.

I see this propaganda enough on the news. Don't need it here. This is more a post for the opinion club.

If anything your right that it shows the deep divide in America. Even between people with a common background like we have here at ExC.

That was purely a political stunt that was orchestrated by two republican governors from Texas and Florida. It happened in september so its not like they dropped them off in the recent arctic blast.

I'm libertarian mostly but I lean conservative. While we can debate back and forth whether it was the "right" thing to do or not. It did highlight an issue that divides the American populace. They were sent to sanctuary states that accept illegal immigrants, that sounds fair. It was an act of defiance toward the lefts "open border" policies. We feel it is the governments job to keep our borders secure. And if there are states that promote open borders then I agree. Let them deal with the ones that come through those open borders. Why should the half of the country that wants stronger borders be forced to deal with a problem the other half is creating?

Here are the sanctuary states: California, Colorado, Illinois, Massachutsetts, New Mexico, Oregon, and Vermont.

Only one of those states border Mexico and that state is in the middle of a homeless crisis!!! California! There are many reasons they are in the middle of a homeless crisis but I'm sure being a sanctuary state hasn't helped.

You can't really make this about religion. It is a national problem. And many of the people that offered assistance to those people in Massachusetts could have been Christian. And were. But even the good people of Martha's Vinyard wanted them out ASAP. 😆 imagine that. Being a tourist destination one would think it would be easy to house 50 immigrants in a nice hotel. A quick search on booking shows 3 pages of high priced hotels and lodging. But were the immigrants taken to a hotel that could easily provide food and shelter instantly out of the goodness of their hearts?  No they stayed at a church in Edgartown. So apparently Christians did come to the rescue for them.

Might try looking at the other side of the story. Immigrants forced to live under bridges at the border because the amount of people coming in. Without the necessary resources. As I said before. California's sanctuary status being a border state has probably been a big part of their crisis right now.

The same is happening in Texas at the border.

Everyone wants to say that our country was built on immigration. And they would be right. But that doesn't mean that as a Sovereign nation we don't have the right to know who is in our country. And to not let people in illegally. Especially when doing so is causing a humanitarian aide crisis of our own.

Thats why this subject should be here in the opinion club. Political differences are best discussed privately. Obviously churches did help those people. Most were wearing t-shirts in the pictures I saw. So couldn't of been to cold.

Even democrats are religious 😆 even if Christians in the south think they aren't lmao 🤣 There is a bill board on the interstate around here that has been kept and maintained since Biden was elected. A local church or religious person. And the billboard reads; "one day everyone will confess Jesus is Lord, even the Democrats!" 😆 🤣  yeah. Some people really think that all democrats are against God. Its funny really. Its not that clear cut. But whatev

So clearly there are two sides to the story.

Yeah, I thought twice about posting it at all because we are still pluralistic here, despite our shared deconversion.

Actually the bussing this time happened on Xmas eve during the recent bitter cold, which is what really hit my button (https://nypost.com/2022/12/25/migrants-bused-to-kamala-harris-home-on-christmas-eve-intended-for-nyc-report/). I agree that we can't take all the refugees from everywhere, there aren't enough resources. I think it's going to get far worse in the next few years. I live by Portland and the homeless population has exploded. I had one mentally ill guy walk straight at my work van yesterday as I drove down the street. He either wanted to die or wanted to feel significant by making me move. There's a lot of that kind of stuff now, though I've encountered it in previous years as well.

My apologies Feugo!

I'm not gonna argue against that. This was the first I saw about the Christmas eve drop off. I guess I would have known if I'd watched the initial video you posted. That is pretty messed up to drop a bunch of people off in the cold like that. But its still more a political issue than a religious one.

I'm so tired of all the red vs blue bullshit propaganda. Those two parties do nothing but keep America divided. Nothing good comes from either party when they are in control.

I agree with your criticisms here.  Nothing against Beau, but you'll find that his past is pretty sketchy if you look into it.  I agree with him more often than not... but I'm not too sure I trust him.
