Goodbye Jesus

People who type in G_d.

Judaism does not prohibit writing the Name of God per se; it prohibits only erasing or defacing a Name of God. However, observant Jews avoid writing any Name of God casually because of the risk that the written Name might later be defaced, obliterated or destroyed accidentally or by one who does not know better.

Doesn't sound any better than anything I've heard from Gerbil.

Instead of going through all of that to explain stuff, why didn't they just say, "We do it because we're superstitious." ?

It'd save a lot of time.

I'm waiting for an explanation from one of our resident Jews on this one.

I never "got it" either.

Serenity Now can explain it, I'm sure.

I remember Mad G bustin out some explanation about how it's a sign of respect.  How it's respectful to omit letters in your deities not actual name is kinda nonsensical.
That's because MG has his head up his ass when it comes to what he has been taught to be "God".

He gave a Christian explanation, not a Jewish one.

That's why his answer sounded so much more stupider. :HaHa:

Deadhobbit already did. His was the "correct" explanation.

It's just personal preference for what they feel is showing reverence. It doesn't hurt anyone.

I find it unnecessary but it's not a big deal.

Of course it isn't a big deal....that doesn't mean you can't make fun of people for doing it!

Ok, I believe you.  Either way, my OP still stands...they're morons.

mmmm....nipples.....

I think "O" looks more like a boobie than a nipple. This is a nipple "."

... (nipple nipple nipple)

Anyway. Yeah. Why the heck do they have to write it G_d, and not _od or Go_ or just simple ___. (Meaning: fill in the blanks with deity of personal preference)

Somebody did this on the forum a while back and it was funny. :HaHa:

Well according to the Bible, the very rocks shout out his name, and the heavens themselves speak of his creation...so we should not write anything that might apply to God...since language and writing obviously came from God, and creative thinking, and humans, and animals....anything that possibly represents God shouldn't be written properly.

___ ___ __ _ _______ _ ____ _ ____!!!  :woohoo:

:lmao: ___ _ _____ _______ ___ ____ _____!

The funny thing with replacing God's name with G_d, means that you still are referencing the same deity (Just like Asim_v said), and when G_d becoms the norm for how to write GOD's name, then G_d can be defiled, so now you have to write it G__, or maybe G_x or Gxd or something, then it becomes Xxx, and you start having this urge to watch porn movies instead everytime you see God's name, and so on...

I guess his true name is: " " (emptiness, void, nothing)

If my memory serves me right, which it rarely does, I think it was no other than our superior atheist on the site: Asimov. Am I right?

I don't really see how the word "G_d" with an absent but still heavily implied "o" is more respectful then "God" with the "o" in plain sight.

An "o" said in the mind is just as plain as an "o" on paper, is it not?

You're right. After all, when a person lusts after another, they're guilty of adultery so, even if these superstitious people remove the "o" from G(@)d, they're still guilty of whatever disrespect that they tried to avoid in the first place.

G(@)d damn! Just about any way you look at it, you can turn their own theology back on'em. :twitch:

Uh, Asimov, I think you may actually be wrong here, right in English, but not in ohter languages, in the OP. IIRC, Hebrew doesn't actually have any vowels, or at least the words are written with only consonants (vowels may be modifierrs on the letters, I am not sure), and I think Arabic is the same way.

Yeah, seems to be a fairly superstitious and useless convention, especially for a lot of the Christians that do it, it's kind of like they are trying to look cooler by keepin' it real with their Jewish roots, kind of like a white guy bein' down wit his homies against tha opression of tha man.

It is primarily a Jewish thing.  I have seen super-spritual Christians do it though.  They think they are being clever or... spiritual... LOL

You are correct that it's a "Jewish" thing, though I find that most Jews today will reword setences so as to avoid having to refer to "G-d" in any way whatsoever. Messianics mostly use it now....that and the word "HaShem" (which means "The Name") so as to avoid spelling out the name of God. The Jews' line of thinking is that someone may inadvertantly throw away the paper the name is written on (or printed on if it's printed from the internet), thus defiling God's name. Messianics do it cuz they think they're Jewish. No Jew that I know uses the phrase, "HaShem."

You're right, Hebrew doesn't have any vowels. Non-English Jews use 4 letter representations of God such as YHVH in Hebrew in order to do this, because speaking the name of God or writing it down is blasphemy.
