If some sort of transporter beam made a copy of you on another planet, then destroyed the you that was here on earth, would you still be you? And if none of the atoms in your body right now are the same as the ones that were there 20 years ago, how is that different? (Your answer to this probably depends on whether you believe in some sort of soul or atman.) Scientists are pretty close to making prosthetic limbs controlled by the brain. they’re also working on 3D printing human organs for transplants. If you had fully functional android limbs and a fake liver, would you still be you? Maybe it could work the same way for the brain too. I’m not an expert, but I think the hippocampus at least is constantly generating new brain cells while other parts of the brain lose brain cells... so do you stop being “you” when you lose or gain all those atoms and cells? TEG
The literal-minded have trouble with the absurd. It used to get me in trouble at school. I guess that is why some people need an inerrant revelation from god . . . .

There is most definitely a universal desire to know spiritual truths. That's why so many people who leave Christianity seek other spiritual avenues. I think your question is actually why don't all humans have the same spiritual beliefs. If you were a Christian then you already know the answer. There's an adversary. satan deceives people into believing things that are more utilitarian for their life at the moment. People buy into these deceptions because they want to. People love their ears to be tickled. Materialists are the same, btw. They buy into nutty fantasies like the AI singularity and star trek stuff. OrdinaryClay, it may make you feel good to say things like this, but it is not anything that will convince an unbeliever. Muslims say the same thing, and I would imagine the same of people in any theistic religion. Stepping back and looking at the whole planet, there is no reason to choose your religion over any other, and good reasons to reject it. And I am not going to argue; it has all been said before.
