Even though their actions were undeniably barbarous, they didn't openly revel in barbarity. The vast majority of active Nazis were ordinary Germans who just went with the current: "mitläufers". It's not like all of them, or even most, were baby killing, genocidal psychos, no matter what monster charicatures we've been fed by Hollywood the past 50 years or so.
