Goodbye Jesus

Things Fundies Say On Facebook

Brother Jeff

Yes, LivingLife, that one. I guess I paraphrased the quote! LOL

Someone posted the old adage "No God, no peace... know God, know peace" bullshit.

Another person posted a verse on my wall that said those who seek God wholeheartedly will find him. I replied, "Some of us have searched wholeheartedly, and found nothing. Just sayin." That particular person is starting to annoy me with all the feel good God stuff and I couldn't restrain myself. It makes me so sad because this person is a gay Christian with AIDS whose church and parents rejected him. He is proudly gay, and somehow has managed to integrate his "lifestyle" with his faith in a way that doesn't bother him. At least he won't admit if it bothers him. I guess I should be happy for him if he finds peace through god, but posting shit on my wall like that has got to stop at some point. He likes Joyce Meyers too, go figure. He knows I'm an atheist and he is actually my cousin. He refuses to have real-life conversations about religion but somehow thinks it's okay to post fluffy religious feel-good cliches on my fb. Blah.

I just posted this to my page:

This picture describes my head for all of my early 20s. I am glad to have finally found myself and true serenity without the constant cognitive dissonance that I ignored as I tried to cling to faith.

intellect-or-belief-500x500.jpg

I'm hoping to start a good discussion, but I bet most of my friends will ignore it. This is the first time I've made a post like this that actually identifies me as a non-religious person. I'm a little scared, actually... any other post I've made has been rather non-specific to me and just general challenges, nothing personal like this!

That's a big step to take, pandora! By the way, I really like David Hayward's work.

Yes, the URL is nakedpastor.com. No, it's not porn.

I find this kind of thing frustrating: http://artandtheeveryday.wordpress.com/2012/10/04/look-up/

A christian friend posted it to facebook. While I agree nature is beautiful, I get really annoyed at the "praise God for the miracle of it!" attitude.

Ever see that SF story about the Star of Bethlehem being an exploded supernova that destroyed countless billions of lives just so the Magi could get to the manger? I thought of it when I saw that image of the star above... wondering how many trillions of lives are represented by the atoms in that star and why God needed to design a cosmos that required so much death to make life.

This is from a certain "Brian Simmons":

"It is time to take prayer to the breakthrough level… the place of Divine response. We must not be content to leave our prayer life on the religious level of merely something that we must do to be spiritual. David prayed and the heavens shook and the voice of God was clearly heard. This is the breakthrough factor that must be reached in our day." It goes on with quotation from what looks like an entire Psalm.

Aargh. This stuff is so painful.

for decades fundies have been talking about reaching the "breakthrough level..."

I had the honor of being tagged in a couple of statuses after I "liked" this:

581536_10151183828254483_377510565_n.jpg

"Really, (me), someone from our church just resurrected form the dead, someone blind just received their sight, and a preacher rose from dead after preaching. God doesn't just go away cause you don't wanna believe!"

and, in all caps, "YOU WANT PROOF THAT THERE IS A GOD? LOOK AROUND, OR YOU'LL NEVER GET IT TILL IT'S TOO LATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Now this person is messaging me privately in a fury. I replied to his first post, "I never said I don't believe in God. I don't believe in church. Haven't decided and never will on the God thing. Unfortunately, I think you are being scammed at your church."

I will post our convo when I am done for your amusement! :D

Him:

But it's just frustrating that you can't see this stuff. You're only hurting yourself by not seeing the big picture. I think that you just don't want things to be as bad as they are. You can't wish away evil.

July 25

  • Me:
    • I think things are horrible... but things have always been horrible.
    • The only way evil will go away is if good people fight for good. No god will undo it for us. I guess we agree on half of that. smile.pngblank.gif

    [*]July 25

    • But if you can't see that they're worse to the EXTREME, then you're fooling yourself. And evil will not only be here, but will run the majority of the earth's doings till the end.

    [*]July 26

    • I agree that humanity's evil will be the undoing of our civilization, but there are many "extreme" evils that have been lessened in the world over the centuries. What specific evils do you think are worse today than they were centuries ago?

Child sex trafficking by politicians, the NDAA, muslims taking over pop culture in our society, freedoms being taken, Iran wants to take out the Israel, Obama hates the US, the movie theater shooting, people are more hateful and disrespectful than ever, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. And it will get worse. Gotta hop off the bus soon.
      • July 26
        • none of those things are new... how do you quantify it to say it is worse now? id say manners have decreased... and i dont think obama hates the us... but the other stuff has always happened in one way shape or form, just my opinion... have a fun bus ride! smile.pngblank.gif

        [*]370978_100001263698593_1176118166_q.jpg

        July 26

        • Oh, come on! There are billions more shootings than ever, the gay agenda, you'll probably explain away the "national ID," which is "the mark of the beast," as "Ronald Reagan" stated. And it's supposed to happen "next year." You think that it's just coincidence that Muslims are against the Christians like never before and that the stage is being set for WW3, a world currency and gov't? Wake up... You give no facts, just conjecture. I like you as a person, that's why I'm concerned. You're desensitized, and that's dangerous!

What you're telling me is that you don't really wanna know. and never say you think I'm being scammed at my church again! smh.

    • I dont think we can know.

    • No. You've never tried. And it's more than a head knowledge thing. But even from a sensical point of view, it still makes more sense that there is one creator than that everything was an accident.

    • I thought I did once, and I was every bit as devout as you... but life experiences and intellectual study showed me that the Christian religion is just as much a fabrication as the others. All religions get down to basically the same principles at some point in their message, and I take the good that I see in religion and apply it to my own life. Namely, love, connectedness, humility, and concern for the poor.

    [*]370978_100001263698593_1176118166_q.jpg

    • To study religion in college only is like going to a Lady Gaga concert to learn about music.

      • Oh, I did try Brian... I have cried out to God and felt his love, I promise you. I even spoke in tongues once. But it was all my own brain playing tricks on me.
      • I became a Christian when I was 9, was active in the church all throught middle and high school, and was active in Campus Crusade for Christ for my early college years. My loss of faith was a painful one and not something I took lightly.

      [*]370978_100001263698593_1176118166_q.jpg

      • No. no. no. 1000 nos. Buddha is a fat dead man. Jesus died for our sins so we can go to heaven. Need I go further?
      • It was painful because you lost the only thing in life that matters. Mark my words. You WILL regret your decision. It is written. And proven.

      • I am glad your beliefs give you comfort and peace. smile.pngblank.gif As long as you dont go around making laws that discriminate against people or start wars over God, I have no problem with it. biggrin.pngblank.gif

      [*]370978_100001263698593_1176118166_q.jpg

      • But you're missing out all the while. God is either all or nothing. And there's too much to dismiss as nothing... unless you're blinded by the enemy.

    • I will regret nothing. I will more than likely cease to exist when I die, and thus none of us will ever know the truth.
    • What exactly am I missing out on now?

    • You will see. The mark of the beast is gonna take place more than likely in our lifetime. You're missing out on happiness. Don't you see how point;ess your life is, believing you'll just vanish? In essence, you're saying that everything you do has no meaning. Look a lil deeper before you go blindly accepting things. Which would you rather have? Nothing happen, or heaven? And his people are truly happy, so even if there were no God, it's still a better life. You can't rebuttal that. Wisely, anyway.

[*]19 minutes ago I am quite happy without God, in fact, much happier now that I don't worry that God is sending everyone I love to Hell. You don't need God to hope, to care, to love, to live. My life may have no meaning that spans eternity, but it means everything to my friends and family. I do not feel life is meaningless even if there is no afterlife.

    • You're just being closed to it. you got hurt by people. You got married. You didn't give up on the human race. What you didn't see is the spiritual warfare that was taking place. That was where the center of the issue was, though. If we could see it all right now, the angels and demons, we'd be horrified

    • I didn't get hurt by anyone.
    • How does getting married have to do with anything?
    • that spiritual warfare is a metaphor for the batttle of good and evil that we all wage in our own minds and societies
    • there are no ghost demons and angels controlling the outcome of our everday lives... WE control the outcome of our lives.

    • Everyone has been hurt. You are blind. out! In the Name of Jesus!

    • Of course I have been hurt by people, but not in some way that culimated in me leaving the church. People's humanity isn't what made me leave.

What a controlling asshole. He's threatening you, psychologically manipulating you, making numerous comments that cry out for documentation/evidence that he doesn't provide, and in the end TYPING OUT HIS REBUKES as if the demons are reading these behind your eyeballs. If he's that imbued with the Howling Spit, why does he feel the need to do that? Does God not work remotely or something? Jeez, total asshole. You're being way more gracious than I ever could. And people wonder why I'm not on FB...

Pandora - might want to go edit the posts you wrote here on the previous page--the profile pic in your post on the previous page also appears on the FB page and it contains your full name. Just sayin' :) If you don't care, feel free to disregard. It's a funny comment thread, either way. None of the swooping fundies seem to understand how really bad they look.

I'm a little baffled... why wouldn't you want to have an open, honest discussion about these things? Jesus understood Thomas, the doubter, and even offered up evidence for him (supposedly). Why is your faith so fragile that you can't discuss these things in a normal fashion?

One LAST try. People have been pronounced dead and came back MANY times. So you're full of crap, even when it comes to medicine. Let alone religion.

      •

But... to keep the peace... I'll leave your claims at face value and instead ask my former question, why is God doing minor things like that instead of really solving the problems in the world? The classic problem of evil. I hope you will take this challenge to your faith... it will only make your faith stronger or bring you closer to reality. It can't hurt you to question your faith. You are a Creationist, right? Look at Genesis. There are two creation stories. Look at the stories of the resurrection. Each gospel gives a different account. I could go on and on...

yes, in those cases of people coming back to life, they were not yet brain dead. They had not yet started the process of decomposition. They may have appeared dead to medical staff. No one has been brought back to life after being dead for more than an hour because that is when the brain is dead and resuscitation cannot occur.

I haven't ruled out the possibility, but saying "they came back to life" is hopefully understandably an incredible claim, and is only natural for me to doubt it.

LET IT GO!!!! Sounds like he is talking to himself... he has to "let it go" to cling to his obviously very fragile faith. I feel so sorry for him. I hope he someday leaves the cult, he is normally a charming young man with a gift for humor and stand-up comedy. He used to be a Satanist. He has used this fact in the past to claim that he once had the same doubts and beliefs as me, even though I tell him that I was not a Satanist.

I really hope he doesn't defriend me... this is too amusing. I really don't want to piss him off because someday he might actually remember me and come to me when he starts to lose that fragile faith of his.

Well, he did it... he unfriended me. Now I'm sad. And now he won't get enough people to perform at the local comedy club, because I always brought the most for him so he could perform. He is obviously doing that thing that some Christians do, shutting out all conflicting evidence and opinion so that he doesn't have to think. And he accused ME of not thinking... so sad.
